Gangotri Demographics

According to the census of India in 2001, the total population of Gangotri was reported to be 606. Out of this the overall male population constitutes 60% whereas the females constitute 40%. The average literacy rate here is 89%; male literacy here is 91% whereas the female literacy rate here is 80%. Gangotri is primarily inhabited by Hindu priests or Brahmins who are related to performing various puja rituals and practices in Gangotri. Apart from this you will also be able to find some Nepalese population who are practicing Hinduism in Gangotri and staying there or running their local shops. Locals who help the pilgrims in completing their Yatra to Gangotri also stay in this holy pilgrimage town. The livelihoods of the local population staying in and around Gangotri depends on the tourists who come for pilgrimage and need help while going on this holy journey or during performing puja rituals.
