Each Dham has its own traditions. At Yamunotri, pilgrims cook Prasad in the hot water of Surya Kund. Gangotri is believed to be where the Ganga first came down to earth, though the glacier source at Gaumukh lies a 19 km trek beyond the temple. Kedarnath is one of the 12 Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva. At Badrinath, devotees believe the oil lamp lit when the temple closes for winter is still burning when the doors open again six months later.

How to Reach Char Dham from Kolkata

None of the four temple towns has a railway station or a commercial airport. This package starts in Delhi, so you first need to get from Kolkata to Delhi.

Kolkata to Delhi

About 12 nonstop flights a day run from Kolkata to Delhi, and the scheduled flight time is roughly 2 hours 35 minutes. By train, the Howrah Rajdhani Express (12301) runs six days a week, not on Sunday, and takes about 17 hours, which means leaving Kolkata the day before Day 1.

Kolkata to Dehradun Flight

IndiGo flies nonstop from Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Airport to Dehradun, but only on some days. The September 2026 schedule showed two flights a week. From Dehradun airport, Haridwar is about 40 km by taxi or bus. Because the group starts in Delhi, talk to us before you book this route.

Kolkata to Haridwar Train

Upasana Express (13035) runs twice a week and Kumbh Express (13037) five days a week, both from Howrah to Dehradun via Haridwar. Doon Express (13009) runs daily to Yog Nagari Rishikesh. From Haridwar or Rishikesh, the rest of the yatra is by road.

Best Time to Visit Char Dham

Go in May or June, or between mid-September and October. Skip July and August. Monsoon rain brings landslides that can shut hill roads for hours, sometimes days, and late September can still be wet: a red alert on 27 September 2026 halted the yatra. Early May and late October can bring snow at Kedarnath and Badrinath.

The exact 2026 closing dates had not been announced when this page was checked on 28 September 2026. The temple committees announce them each year, and they usually fall in the first half of November.

Char Dham Registration 2026

Registration is compulsory for every pilgrim, and it is free. Register on registrationandtouristcare.uk.gov.in, through the Tourist Care Uttarakhand app, or at the offline counters in Haridwar, Rishikesh and Vikasnagar. You receive a Yatra Registration Letter with a QR code, which is verified at the dham checkpoints. Keep it on your phone and on paper, together with the ID you registered with. The toll-free helpline is 1364, and you can also call 0135-3520100. Nobody needs to be paid to register you.

Char Dham Altitude and Kedarnath Trek Distance

Kedarnath also has trek cut-off times. In the 2026 season, pilgrims have not been allowed to start after 1:00 PM at Sonprayag or 1:30 PM at Gaurikund. Local orders can change these timings with weather or crowds, so check them on the day.

Char Dham by Helicopter

No helicopter flies from Kolkata. For Kedarnath, shuttle flights run from the Guptkashi, Phata and Sirsi helipads, and the temple committee says tickets are sold only through IRCTC HeliYatra (heliyatra.irctc.co.in). Charter tours to all four dhams start from the Sahastradhara helipad in Dehradun and are sold as a separate package. Every flight depends on weather and operating conditions on the day. Helicopter charges are not part of this road tour.

Tips for Pilgrims Travelling from Kolkata

• Pack for real cold. Nights at Kedarnath and Badrinath can drop close to freezing even in May and October, so bring thermals, a heavy jacket, a woollen cap and gloves.
• All meals on this tour are vegetarian, and near the dhams you will mostly find vegetarian food anyway. Dry snacks from home help on the long drive days.
• If you have a heart, blood pressure, diabetes or breathing condition, ask your doctor about high-altitude travel before you book. On trek days, walk slowly.
• Keep your return from Delhi flexible. One landslide on Day 11 or 12 can hold the vehicle for hours.
• Mobile signal drops on parts of the route. Download offline maps and carry cash for ponies, dolis and small purchases.
