How to Reach Char Dhams from Hyderabad
By Air
The quickest option from Hyderabad is a direct flight to Dehradun. Rajiv Gandhi International Airport, Hyderabad has regular direct flights to Jolly Grant Airport, Dehradun. Flight time is roughly 2 hours 30 minutes. From Jolly Grant, taxis are available to Haridwar (about 1 hour) or Rishikesh, which are the two main starting points for the Char Dham circuit.
By Train
You can take a train from Hyderabad (Secunderabad Railway Station) to Haridwar or Delhi. Several trains run from Secunderabad to Delhi, and from Delhi you can take a connecting train or bus to Haridwar. The total journey by train from Hyderabad to Haridwar takes approximately 28-32 hours.
By Road
A direct road journey from Hyderabad to Haridwar is around 1,700 km and is not practical to cover in one go. The usual approach is to fly or train to Delhi or Dehradun, and then continue by road. From Haridwar, taxis and government buses run to each Dham base town - Barkot for Yamunotri, Uttarkashi for Gangotri, Guptkashi for Kedarnath, and Joshimath for Badrinath.
Char Dham Yatra by Helicopter from Hyderabad
For pilgrims who want to complete the Char Dham Yatra without the long road stretches, our helicopter package is available. Helicopter services operate from Dehradun Sahastradhara Helipad. The package covers all four Dhams in 6 Days / 5 Nights. This option is well-suited for senior citizens, those with health limitations, or anyone with limited leave.
Keep in mind that helicopter bookings fill up fast during peak season. Advance booking is strongly recommended, especially for the May-June window.
Things to Do at Char Dhams
Attend Aarti and Temple Rituals
Each Dham has its own morning and evening Aarti schedule. The Kedarnath Aarti at dawn and the Ganga Aarti at Haridwar in the evening are particularly moving. You can also participate in Rudra Abhishek and Prasad distribution at most temples. These are not ticketed events - just show up, be respectful, and take part.
Trekking
The Kedarnath trek (16 km from Gaurikund) and Yamunotri trek (6 km from Jankichatti) are the two main treks on the circuit. Both are on defined paths with regular foot traffic. Ponies and dolis are available if trekking is not an option. Wear good grip shoes and carry water.
Take a Holy Dip
Pilgrims traditionally take a dip in the Surya Kund hot spring at Yamunotri, Bhagirathi River at Gangotri, Gaurikund hot spring before the Kedarnath trek, and Tapt Kund before entering Badrinath Temple. These are not just rituals - the hot springs have genuine warmth that is a relief in cold mountain weather.
Explore Nearby Spots
Beyond the main temples, there is quite a bit to see. Mana Village near Badrinath, Bhim Pul, Vyas Gufa, Vasudhara Falls, and the point where the Saraswati River disappears underground are all worth a stop. Harsil on the Gangotri route is a quiet valley worth spending an hour in if you have time.
Places to Visit on Char Dham Yatra from Hyderabad
Haridwar
Your Yatra will pass through Haridwar at least twice - at the start and end. Har Ki Pauri is the main ghat, and the evening Ganga Aarti here draws thousands of pilgrims. Mansa Devi Temple (reachable by ropeway) and Chandi Devi Temple are the other key stops. Haridwar is also where most pilgrims buy items for puja.
Barkot
Barkot is a small town in the Uttarkashi district and serves as the overnight base for the Yamunotri trip. It is not a sightseeing destination on its own - but the drive to Barkot through the mountains is good, and Kempty Falls near Mussoorie is a short stop on the way.
Yamunotri Dham
Dedicated to Goddess Yamuna, the Yamunotri Temple sits at 3,291 metres. The idol is of black marble. Just outside the temple is Surya Kund - a hot spring where pilgrims cook rice wrapped in cloth as an offering. Divya Shila, a tall rock pillar, is worshipped before entering the main temple.
Uttarkashi
Called the 'Kashi of the North', Uttarkashi sits on the Bhagirathi River. The Kashi Vishwanath Temple here is a major stop. Right opposite it is the Shakti Temple with a large iron Trishul (trident) said to be thousands of years old. Uttarkashi is also the overnight base for Gangotri.
Gangotri Dham
The Gangotri Temple is on the right bank of the Bhagirathi River at 3,048 metres. It is dedicated to Goddess Ganga. The actual source of the Ganga is Gaumukh Glacier, 18 km further - a separate trek not covered in the standard package. The Bhagirathi River in front of the temple is very cold and fast-moving. Harsil village, 21 km before Gangotri, is a quiet apple-farming valley worth a short stop.
Kedarnath
Kedarnath sits at 3,583 metres and is one of the 12 Jyotirlingas. The temple is ancient - its current structure was built by Adi Shankaracharya. Near the temple is the Shankaracharya Samadhi, the Bhairav Nath Temple, and Vasuki Tal lake (a separate trek). The weather here can change quickly - carry a windcheater regardless of the season.
Badrinath
Badrinath is dedicated to Lord Vishnu and is located at 3,133 metres between the Nar and Narayan mountain ranges. Tapt Kund (hot spring) is just below the temple - pilgrims bathe here before darshan. Brahma Kapal nearby is where ancestor rituals are performed. Mana Village, 3 km from the temple, is the last inhabited village before the border and has Bhim Pul, Vyas Gufa, and the Saraswati River.
Guptkashi
Guptkashi is on the Kedarnath route, about 47 km from Kedarnath. It has the Vishwanath Temple and Manikarnika Kund. Some packages use Guptkashi as a stopover instead of Sitapur. The views of the Kedarnath range from Guptkashi in clear weather are very good.
Accommodation at Char Dhams
At most points on the Char Dham circuit, you will find a mix of GMVN (Garhwal Mandal Vikas Nigam) lodges, private hotels, and Dharamshalas. GMVN properties are government-run, clean, and reliably available across all major stops. Private hotels range from basic to mid-range - true luxury hotels are rare above Joshimath or Uttarkashi.
Kedarnath is the exception. Accommodation there is basic - small rooms, tents, and Dharamshalas. Meals at Kedarnath have to be paid separately. Our package covers meals at all other stops but not at Kedarnath, since our catering team cannot operate there.
In peak season (May-June), availability at all Dham locations gets very tight. Our package includes pre-booked hotels so you do not have to worry about this.

Travel Tips for Pilgrims from Hyderabad
A few practical things that actually matter on this trip:
- Clothes: The temperature drops sharply at night even in May-June. Kedarnath and Badrinath can be near-freezing after sunset. Carry at least one good quality fleece or down jacket, thermals, and a windcheater.
- Health: If you have blood pressure, heart, or breathing issues, get a medical check done before booking. Carry a pulse oximeter - altitude above 3,000 metres can affect oxygen levels. The doctor's advice is not optional here.
- Cash: UPI and cards work in Haridwar, Rishikesh, and Uttarkashi. At Gangotri, Kedarnath, and Yamunotri, carry enough cash. ATMs exist in Uttarkashi and Joshimath but can run out during peak season.
- Yatra Registration: Online registration at registrationandtouristcare.uk.gov.in is mandatory. Keep the registration slip and your original ID proof with you throughout the trip.
- Monsoon warning: July-August is monsoon season in Uttarakhand. Landslides and road closures are common. The Char Dham Yatra is best avoided in these months.
- Photography: Photography inside the sanctum of most temples is not allowed. Outside the temple complex, it is generally fine. Follow any restrictions displayed at the site.
- Footwear: Carry a separate pair of footwear that is easy to remove - you will be removing shoes at every temple entrance multiple times a day.
Booking Information
- Advance booking: Book at least 6-8 weeks before your travel date in peak season (May-June). Accommodation and transport both get booked up. Off-season (September-October) has more flexibility.
