Four of the holiest pilgrimages in India; Gangotri, Yamunotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath are grouped together as Char Dham. Collectively the Char Dham Trail is one of the most sought-after spiritual trails across the world. The Himalayan denomination Char Dham is said to have the power of washing away all the sins of past life and clear the path to divine liberation. However, as all the Char Dhams are located in high altitude rocky terrain; it’s better to know the weather predictions before planning a visit.

Maximum tourist traffic to the Char Dham happens during April to October. The month wise weather predictions are given below.

Badrinath and Kedarnath Weather predictions

Badrinath and Kedarnath are situated in close proximity to each other so the weather in these two Dhams follows the same pattern approximately. However Kedarnath suffers from colder and harsher climate than Badrinath and is also more prone to landslides.

Jan to March:
Weather remains extremely cold with frequently occurring snowfall. In Badrinath, the winter sports events happen during February and March. By end-March the temperature starts getting warmer and hits 12 degrees to 14 degrees. Kedarnath temperature often falls to sub zero around January to February.

April:
There is moderately cold climate in April that will be perfect for travel. The temperature ranges from 7 degrees to 17 degrees.

May:
Moderate cold with temperature range going up to 18 degrees. Suitable for outdoor trips.

June:
Temperature ranges from 10 degrees to 20 degrees and is the warmest month here. Atmosphere remains moderate and nature looks at her bountiful best.

July:
Temperature between 7 degrees to 18 degrees with predictions of light refreshing showers.

August:
Cool climate bordering between 7 degrees to 15 degrees. Plants begin to flower around this time and there is drizzling rain. In Kedarnath the rains are sometimes torrential leading to fear of landslides.

September:
Temperature drops between 7 degrees to 15 degrees. Weather remains humid with post-monsoon rains

October:
Temperature drops further between 6 degrees to ten degrees and climate is temperate and cold

November to December:
The temperature hovers between 3 degrees to 7 degrees. Snowfall might occur. Tourists are advised to stay away during this season.

Gangotri and Yamunotri Weather predictions

Gangotri and Yamunotri are situated at close proximity to each other so the weather pattern in these two pilgrimages follows the same pattern to a large extent.

Jan to March:
Weather remains rather cold with sleet and snowfall at frequent intervals. In winters the weather is uncomfortable enough to disrupt the journey of tourists. However By end March the temperature starts getting warmer and hits up to 20 degrees.

April:
There is moderate and warm climate in April that will is perfect for travel and pilgrimage trip to Gaumukh glacier. The temperature ranges from 7 degrees to 17 degrees generally but the trek to the glacier will take you to sub zero temperatures and icy paths.

May:
Moderate climate with temperature range going up to 25 degrees. Suitable for outdoor trips.

June:
Temperature ranges from 15 degrees to 30 degrees and is the warmest month in Gangotri and Yamunotri. Atmosphere remains moderate and the greenery around makes it a good time for temple visits.

July:
Temperature between 12 degrees to 25 degrees with predictions of heavy showers. Both Gangotri and Yamunotri experience heavy rainfall.

August:
Cool climate bordering between 10 degrees to 22 degrees. Both Yamunotri and Gangotri are places with river bodies and August is an unsuitable time for visit to these places. In August the rains are sometimes torrential leading to fear of drowning cases.

September:
Temperature drops between 10 degrees to 18 degrees. Weather remains quite humid with occasional heavy showers.

October:
Temperature drops further between 10 degrees to 15 degrees and climate is quite pleasant and cool. This is a good time for return visit to Gangotri and Yamunotri.

November to December:
Temperature hovers between 5 degrees to 7 degrees. Snowfall occurs at times specially in Gangotri. Tourists are advised to stay away from all the Char Dhams during this season.
