Vishnuprayag – A Holy Panch Prayag in Uttarakhand

Vishnuprayag is called one of the holiest among the five Panch Prayags in India. Many people visit this peaceful spot where the Vishnuprayag River, Dhauliganga and Alaknanda, join together. The place is dedicated to Lord Vishnu and is also mentioned in many old Hindu holy books. At 1,372 meters above sea level, it passes through Garhwal hills. You’ll see this spot on the way, so even if it’s not part of your tour, stop and take a moment to see how beautiful it is.

The place where these two rivers meet is in Chamoli, Uttarakhand and many devotees travel from far away to visit here. Most people visit Panch Prayag during special Hindu festivals like Makar Sankranti, Basant Panchami, Ram Navami, and Uttarayani. The natural beauty here is so relaxing. Even if you're not into religion, it's perfect for a peaceful break away from the noise of city life. You can feel calm and spiritually refreshed when you come to this place.

Origins and Journeys – Alaknanda and Dhauliganga Rivers

  • The Alaknanda River begins from the meeting point of the Satopanth and Bhagirathi Kharak glaciers near the Chaukhamba peaks in Uttarakhand.
  • Near Badrinath, the Saraswati River from Mana Village meets the Alaknanda River, though it is a smaller joining point.
  • The Dhauliganga River begins near Niti Pass (close to Tibet) and flows down to meet the Alaknanda at Vishnuprayag.

Why People Visit the Holy Vishnuprayag

  • People believe this Prayag is special because of its many old stories and history.
  • Sage Narad is said to have prayed and meditated here for Lord Vishnu. Pleased by his devotion, Lord Vishnu appeared and blessed him. A small temple 2 km from the Prayag marks this story.
