The Panch Kedar Yatra is one of the most demanding and spiritually rewarding pilgrimages in the entire Hindu tradition. Located across the rugged Garhwal Himalayan terrain in Uttarakhand, the five Kedar temples — Kedarnath, Tungnath, Rudranath, Madhyamaheshwar, and Kalpeshwar — are the five places where different body parts of Lord Shiva manifested in the form of a bull, according to the legend of the Mahabharata.

The story goes that after the Kurukshetra War, the Pandavas sought Lord Shiva's forgiveness for the sin of killing their own kin. Lord Shiva, unwilling to forgive them easily, disguised himself as a bull in the Garhwal mountains. When Bhima recognized the bull at Kedarnath and tried to catch him, the bull dived into the ground — leaving his hump at Kedarnath. The remaining parts of the bull appeared at different locations, now known as the Panch Kedar temples.

This 16-day Panch Kedar Yatra package from Delhi covers all five temples with a combination of road travel, trekking, and camping. It includes hotels where available and camping tents at high-altitude stops. All meals, ground transfers, and expert local guidance are included. The Panch Kedar circuit is physically challenging — especially Rudranath (20 km trek) and Madhyamaheshwar (19 km trek) — but every step of it is worth the effort.

Best Time for Panch Kedar Yatra

If you plan to complete all five temples in one trip, the window of May–June and September–October is when all temples are simultaneously accessible. The Rudranath temple has the shortest season (June–September), so that sets the practical limit. July and August are monsoon months with frequent landslides on approach roads — not ideal for the full circuit.

Month-wise Quick Reference

Month Conditions Recommendation
May – June 15–20°C, clear skies, rhododendrons blooming Best for full circuit — all 5 temples open, pleasant trekking
July – August Monsoon — heavy rain, landslide risk Avoid for full circuit; Rudranath/Madhyamaheshwar routes dangerous
September – October Cool, lush green, excellent visibility Excellent — stable trails, best views, comfortable temperatures
November onwards Snow begins, temples close one by one Only Kalpeshwar accessible; avoid for full circuit

Safety Tips for Panch Kedar Yatra

  • Rudranath and Madhyamaheshwar are remote — always hire a local guide. Trails are not as well-marked as Kedarnath.
  • Build in one extra acclimatization day before Rudranath and Madhyamaheshwar — both are high altitude treks.
  • Carry a sleeping bag rated to at least -5°C for camp nights at Gaundhar, Rudranath, and Dumuk.
  • July–August monsoon makes approach roads to Rudranath dangerous. September is safer.
  • Personal medication: Diamox (altitude sickness), ORS, pain relief, antiseptic cream for trek cuts.
  • Physical preparation: Start daily 5 km walks at least 6 weeks before the Panch Kedar Yatra. This is not a casual trip.

Panch Kedar Yatra Registration 2026

  • Kedarnath — Mandatory Online Registration: Register free at registrationandtouristcare.uk.gov.in before departure. Carry the registration slip (digital or printout) — entry at Sonprayag/Gaurikund check post is not permitted without it. Biometric registration also required at Haridwar/Rishikesh counters; carry original Aadhaar card.
  • Other 4 Temples: Tungnath, Rudranath, Madhyamaheshwar, and Kalpeshwar do not require separate advance online registration. Standard trekking permits apply and are arranged by us as part of the package.
  • We handle it for you: All registration, biometric, and permit formalities are managed by our team. You do not need to navigate this process independently.

Frequently Asked Questions

The complete Panch Kedar circuit takes 15 to 20 days depending on trekking pace, acclimatization stops, and weather. Our package is 16 days, which is the minimum comfortable duration.

Rudranath is the most challenging. The 20 km trek from Sagar village involves steep, remote terrain through dense forests and rocky paths. It is also one of the least-visited — so you will rarely see other pilgrims on this trail. Madhyamaheshwar (19 km) is a close second in difficulty.

Kalpeshwar is the easiest and most accessible. A motorable road reaches Urgam village and from there it is only a 2 km easy walk to the temple. Kalpeshwar is also the only Panch Kedar that remains open throughout the year.

Our 16-day Panch Kedar Yatra Package is priced at ₹48,600 per person on twin sharing. Individual costs without a package can range from ₹35,000 to ₹65,000+ depending on accommodation category and number of people.

The traditional scriptural order follows the sequence in which Lord Shiva's body parts appeared: Kedarnath → Tungnath → Rudranath → Madhyamaheshwar → Kalpeshwar. This order is followed in our itinerary as well.

The confirmed Panch Kedar opening dates for 2026 (announced on Maha Shivratri, February 26, 2026) are: Kedarnath — 22 April 2026; Tungnath — 2 May 2026; Rudranath — 18 May 2026; Madhyamaheshwar — 21 May 2026. Kalpeshwar is open year-round. For the complete circuit in one trip, plan your departure for late May to June, or September to October.

Yes, Kedarnath requires mandatory free registration at the official Uttarakhand portal (registrationandtouristcare.uk.gov.in) before departure. Biometric registration at Haridwar or Rishikesh counters is also required — carry your original Aadhaar card. Our package handles all registration and permit formalities on your behalf.

The Panch Kedar Yatra requires good physical fitness. Total trekking across all 5 temples is approximately 60+ km, with daily treks ranging from 2 km (Kalpeshwar) to 22 km (Rudranath). We recommend starting a daily 5 km walk routine at least 6 weeks before departure. Senior citizens in good health can complete the Yatra — we provide dedicated support and pacing care for senior pilgrims. Consult your doctor if you have any cardiac or respiratory conditions.

The total trekking distance for the complete Panch Kedar circuit is approximately 60–65 km across all five temples: Kedarnath (16 km one way from Gaurikund), Madhyamaheshwar (19 km from Ransi), Tungnath (4 km from Chopta), Rudranath (20–22 km from Sagar village), and Kalpeshwar (2 km from Urgam). The road distance covered by private vehicle is an additional ~500 km across the 16-day itinerary.
