Delhi to Kedarnath Route and Distance

Kedarnath has no road. By road, Delhi to Gaurikund is roughly 450 to 465 km, and from there you cover about 16 km to the temple on foot, by pony or palki. All private vehicles stop at Sonprayag. According to the state Transport Department (June 2026), about 220 shuttle vehicles run between Sonprayag and Gaurikund at a fixed fare of ₹50 per person, and 20 of them are kept for women and senior citizens. Approximate distances and driving times on this tour:

• Delhi to Haridwar: about 210 to 220 km, 5 to 7 hours
• Haridwar to Guptkashi: about 210 km, 7 to 9 hours
• Guptkashi to Sonprayag: about 26 to 30 km, around 1 hour
• Sonprayag to Gaurikund: 5 km by shared shuttle
• Gaurikund to Kedarnath: about 16 km trek, 6 to 8 hours on foot
• Gaurikund to Rudraprayag: about 75 km, 3 to 4 hours
• Rudraprayag to Rishikesh: about 141 km, 4 to 5 hours
• Rishikesh to Delhi: about 240 km, 6 to 7 hours

Driving times change with traffic, weather and road repairs, especially in peak season.

Kedarnath Trek Options: Walk, Pony, Palki, Pithu or Helicopter

You can walk the 16 km path from Gaurikund. It is paved and climbs steadily past Jungle Chatti, Bhimbali and Linchauli. If walking the full distance is hard for you, there are four other ways up, and none of them is included in the package price.

• Pony (mule): you ride up with a handler and can walk back down if you prefer.
• Palki (doli): a chair carried by four bearers. It suits senior citizens and people who cannot ride a pony.
• Pithu: a porter carries you in a basket on his back. It is usually used for children and light adults.
• Helicopter: shuttles fly to Kedarnath from the Phata, Sersi and Guptkashi helipads. BKTC states that shuttle tickets can be booked only on heliyatra.irctc.co.in. Flights depend on the weather.

Hire a pony, palki or pithu through an authorised counter, check the rate before you start and keep the receipt.

Kedarnath Yatra 2026: Important Rules and Tips

Registration is Mandatory

The Uttarakhand Tourism registration portal says registration has been compulsory since 2014, and it costs nothing. Register online at registrationandtouristcare.uk.gov.in before you leave home. Carry the registration and a photo ID; verification counters are set up at the entry of each Dham, including Kedarnath.

Best Time to Visit Kedarnath

May and June have pleasant weather and the biggest crowds. July and August are the riskiest months, because monsoon rain can trigger landslides on the roads and the trek route. September and October are usually clearer, with cold nights. The temple closes on Bhai Dooj in November.

Health and What to Carry

Kedarnath is at around 3,580 m. Walk regularly for a few weeks before the trip and take the climb slowly. If you have a heart, blood pressure or breathing condition, consult your doctor before booking a high-altitude trip. Carry warm clothes, a rain jacket, good trekking shoes, a torch, basic medicines and some cash for the trek.

Places to Visit in and Around Kedarnath

Along with Darshan at the main temple, these places are close by. The first three fit easily into your time at Kedarnath on this tour. The lakes need an extra day.

• Adi Shankaracharya Samadhi: the memorial of Adi Shankaracharya, just behind the temple.
• Bhim Shila: the large boulder behind the temple. Many pilgrims believe it shielded the temple from the 2013 flood waters.
• Bhairavnath Temple: the open-air shrine of Bhairavnath, the guardian deity of Kedarnath, on a ridge overlooking the main temple, a short climb away.
• Chorabari Tal (Gandhi Sarovar): a glacial lake about 2 to 3 km by trail from Kedarnath. Some of Mahatma Gandhi's ashes were scattered here, which gave it its second name.
• Vasuki Tal: a high-altitude lake reached by a long, steep trek beyond Kedarnath. The trail is rough, so go only with a local guide and in clear weather.
• Triyuginarayan Temple: near Sonprayag, believed to be where Lord Shiva married Goddess Parvati. A fire said to have burned since the wedding is still kept alive here. Mention it when you enquire if you want to add it, as it needs extra time.

Who Should Book This Package

This 6-day tour suits families and first-time pilgrims who want hotels, meals and road transport arranged from Delhi, and who have about a week for the trip. It also works for senior citizens who plan to use a pony, palki or helicopter for the trek, since the rest of the journey is by car with a night halt every day.

If you have only 3 or 4 days, a Kedarnath helicopter package is a better fit. If you want to visit Badrinath as well, choose a Do Dham package instead.

Common Mistakes to Avoid on the Kedarnath Yatra

• Starting the trek late: leave Gaurikund early in the morning so that you reach Kedarnath before dark.
• Booking the return train or flight too close: landslides and traffic can delay the drive back, so keep a buffer of a few hours on the last day.
• Ignoring the weather in July and August: check road and weather updates daily during the monsoon and be ready for changes to the plan.
• Carrying heavy luggage on the trek: leave the big bags in the cab or hotel and take only a small backpack to Kedarnath.
• Paying unverified websites for helicopter tickets: book only on the IRCTC HeliYatra portal and never pay through personal UPI IDs or QR codes shared on WhatsApp.
