About the Two Dhams — Yamunotri and Gangotri
Yamunotri Dham
Yamunotri is the first stop in the Chhota Char Dham circuit and the source of the sacred Yamuna River. The temple, dedicated to Goddess Yamuna, sits at 3,293 metres in the Uttarkashi district on the slopes of Bandarpunch mountain. Just 10 metres from the temple is Surya Kund — a naturally boiling hot spring where devotees cook rice in a cloth bag as prasad for the goddess. Nearby Divya Shila, a sacred rock pillar, is worshipped before entering the main temple. The 6 km trek from Janki Chatti to the temple passes through forest and rocky terrain, with the river audible throughout.
Gangotri Dham
Gangotri is the second Dham and the origin point of the holy Ganga River. The white marble temple at 3,100 metres sits on the banks of the Bhagirathi River — named after King Bhagirath, whose penance brought the Ganga from heaven to earth. The Bhagirath Shila, the sacred rock where Bhagirath prayed, stands near the temple. Unlike Yamunotri, Gangotri is fully accessible by road from Uttarkashi — no trekking required. The evening Ganga Aarti at the temple is one of the most moving experiences on this entire yatra.

Critical 2026 Requirements — Read Before You Book
Two things have changed for 2026 that every pilgrim must know before planning this yatra:
1. Char Dham Yatra Registration Is Mandatory
All pilgrims visiting Yamunotri and Gangotri must register online and carry a QR-coded e-pass. Checkposts before both Dhams verify this e-pass. Without a valid registration, you will be turned back — regardless of how far you have travelled or how much you have paid.
| Registration Detail | Information |
|---|---|
| Official portal | registrationandtouristcare.uk.gov.in |
| WhatsApp registration | Send 'YATRA' to +91-8394833833 |
| Mobile app | Tourist Care Uttarakhand (Android & iOS) |
| Registration fee | Free — NIL for 2026 |
| Document required | Aadhaar card (mandatory for Indian nationals) |
| When to register | At least 3–4 weeks before travel. May–June slots fill fast. |
| Checkpost — Yamunotri | Before Janki Chatti / Barkot area — e-pass QR scanned |
| Checkpost — Gangotri | Entry point on Gangotri road — e-pass verified here |
2. Temple Opening and Closing Dates 2026
| Dham | Opens 2026 | Closes 2026 (Tentative) |
|---|---|---|
| Yamunotri | 19 April 2026 (Akshaya Tritiya) | 11 November 2026 (Bhai Dooj) |
| Gangotri | 19 April 2026 (Akshaya Tritiya) | ~10 November 2026 (Bhai Dooj) |
Closing dates are officially confirmed on Dussehra / Vijaya Dashami. Confirm before booking return travel.
Yamunotri Trek Guide — What to Know Before You Go
| Trek Detail | Information |
|---|---|
| Trek starts from | Janki Chatti (last motorable point, 18 km from Syanachatti) |
| Trek distance | 6 km one way |
| Time uphill | 3–4 hours on foot |
| Time downhill | 2 hours on foot |
| Difficulty level | Moderate — stone-paved path, no technical climbing |
| Last 2 km | Steep ascent — most demanding section of the route |
| Pony charges (one way) | INR 800-1,500 approx. (2026 market rate, subject to revision) |
| Doli/Palki charges (one way) | INR 3,000-4,500 approx. (2026 market rate, subject to revision) |
| Tea stalls / rest stops | Available at regular intervals along the route |
| Suitable for | Beginners and fit senior citizens — with proper pacing |
Start the trek early — by 7:00 AM at the latest. Afternoon cloud cover and sudden rain are common on this trail. Arriving at the temple by mid-morning means shorter queues and safer conditions for the descent.
Acclimatise at Syanachatti or Barkot for at least one night before the trek day. Coming directly from a city at sea level and attempting this climb the same day is a common mistake that leads to exhaustion and altitude discomfort.
Places to See on This Yatra
At Yamunotri
- Surya Kund — boiling hot spring just 10 metres from Yamunotri temple. Devotees cook rice here as prasad for Goddess Yamuna. Temperature stays near 88 degrees Celsius year round.
- Divya Shila — sacred pillar-shaped rock worshipped by pilgrims before entering the main Yamunotri temple.
- Hanuman Chatti — village before Janki Chatti, famous for the ancient Hanuman temple where the mythological encounter between Lord Hanuman and Bhima took place.
At Gangotri
- Bhagirath Shila — the sacred rock near the Gangotri temple where King Bhagirath performed penance to bring the Ganga to earth. One of the most significant mythological sites in the pilgrimage.
- Gangotri Glacier viewpoint (Gaumukh) — the actual source of the Ganga is 19 km from Gangotri at Gaumukh. The glacier trek is a separate permit-based journey, not part of this package — but the glacier view from the road is stunning on clear days.
- Pandava Gufa — a natural cave near Gangotri believed to be the site of Pandava meditation. A short walk from the temple.

What to Actually Expect on This Yatra
Most pilgrims arrive at Haridwar excited and reach Yamunotri somewhat humbled — not because the yatra is too hard, but because the final 2 km of the Janki Chatti to Yamunotri climb are genuinely steep. Stone-paved, not technical — but demanding. Anyone who has not been climbing stairs regularly will feel it.
Gangotri is a different experience entirely. You drive all the way to the temple. The shrine is quieter and smaller than most expect — a white marble structure on the banks of the Bhagirathi, surrounded by pine trees, with the sound of the river constant in the background. The evening Ganga Aarti here is more personal than at Haridwar, and for many pilgrims more moving.
One thing nobody prepares you for: the Uttarkashi to Gangotri road can be beautiful on a clear day and nerve-wracking in mist or rain. Always budget extra time for Day 4. Do not schedule tight travel connections after Gangotri.
What to Carry for Gangotri Yamunotri Yatra
- Good trekking shoes with ankle support and grip — essential for Yamunotri trail
- Warm jacket and thermal inner layer — nights drop to 0–7 degrees Celsius even in May
- Woollen cap, gloves, and warm socks
- Rainproof jacket or poncho — afternoon showers common from May onwards
- Water bottle (minimum 1.5 litres) and ORS sachets
- Energy bars and dry fruits for the Yamunotri trek — no shops on the upper trail
- Sunscreen SPF 50+ and UV sunglasses — UV intensity is high at altitude
- Basic medicines: paracetamol, antacid, motion sickness tablets, Diamox if prescribed
- Aadhaar card (original) — mandatory for Char Dham registration and checkpost identity
- Printed Char Dham e-pass + digital backup — mobile signal is weak between Barkot and Janki Chatti, and near Gangotri
- Sufficient cash — no ATMs at Yamunotri or Gangotri. Withdraw at Barkot, Uttarkashi, or Rishikesh
- Portable power bank — charging points very limited at high-altitude stays
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Not registering for Char Dham e-pass before travel — you will be turned back at the checkpost before Janki Chatti and on the Gangotri road. Register at registrationandtouristcare.uk.gov.in at least 3–4 weeks ahead.
- Starting the Yamunotri trek after 10 AM — afternoon weather on this trail changes fast. Begin early, return by 2 PM.
- Skipping acclimatisation — do not attempt the Yamunotri trek on the same day you leave from a plains city. One night at Syanachatti makes a real difference.
- Carrying heavy luggage to Janki Chatti — you carry your own bag on the trek. 5 kg is the practical maximum.
- Not carrying cash — there are no ATMs at Yamunotri or Gangotri. Withdraw at Uttarkashi or Barkot.
- Travelling in July–August — landslides are common on the Uttarkashi–Gangotri and Barkot–Yamunotri roads. Not the recommended window.
- Booking the last week of October without verifying closing dates — temples can close earlier than expected if the religious calendar shifts.
Pro Tips for a Smooth Do Dham Yatra
- Register on the Char Dham portal in March 2026 when it opens — May and June slots fill within days.
- Carry a printed copy of your e-pass. Mobile connectivity is unreliable between Barkot and Janki Chatti, and near Gangotri.
- Book hotels in Syanachatti and Uttarkashi 3–4 weeks in advance for May–June travel. Rooms at Syanachatti especially are limited.
- Start the Yamunotri trek before 7:30 AM — the trail is least crowded and most pleasant in early morning.
- Visit Gangotri temple in the evening for the Ganga Aarti — significantly more atmospheric than the morning visit.
- Carry extra warm layers for the Uttarkashi to Gangotri drive — temperature drops sharply as you gain altitude.
- Senior citizens and those with any health condition should choose doli or pony for Yamunotri without hesitation. The final 2 km are genuinely steep.
