The Chardham Yatra 2026 season opens in April. Plan your trip and book in advance, especially for May-June when slots fill up fast:

Closing dates are announced on Vijayadashami (Dussehra) by the respective temple committees each year. Confirm exact dates if planning October travel.

Best Time to Visit Char Dham Sites

The best time for the Chardham Yatra is May-June and September-October. In May-June, daytime temperatures at lower altitudes are warm (25-30°C), but at the Dhams (3,000+ m), expect daytime highs of 10-18°C with nights dropping to 2-8°C. September-October sees cooler nights, near-freezing at Kedarnath and Badrinath by mid-October. Both seasons are peak season with long darshan queues and crowded hotels. Book 6-8 weeks in advance.

July to August marks the monsoon season at all the Char Dham sites. You should avoid doing the Chardham Yatra during these months due to heavy rainfall. The chances of landslides also increase during these months leading to delays and road blockages.

How to Reach Haridwar (Starting Point)

By Rail (Recommended)

Haridwar Junction and Rishikesh Railway Stations have direct trains from major Indian cities. Most pilgrims arrive by train—it’s convenient and affordable.

By Air

Jolly Grant Airport in Dehradun (nearest option) is about 50 km from Haridwar. From there, take a taxi or pre-arrange transport through us.

By Road

Haridwar is well-connected by road. Regular bus services and shared taxis operate from major cities in North India.

Main Activities During the Yatra

Attend Aarti and Temple Rituals

Each temple has daily aarti ceremonies—the Ganga Aarti at Har Ki Pauri in Haridwar (Day 01) draws many pilgrims throughout the year. You can participate in rituals including Prasad distribution, pujas, and Rudra Abhishek at each location. Check timing locally as schedules vary by season.

Trekking

The Char Dham sites are located in high-altitude regions and trekking is required to reach some of these sites. The Yamunotri trek is 6 km each way from Jankichatti. The Kedarnath trek is 16 km each way from Gaurikund. During the trekking expedition you can build a close connection with nature and admire the Himalayan scenery. Pony and doli services are available at both starting points for those who cannot trek on foot.

Take a Holy Dip

On your way to the Kedarnath shrine, you can take a holy dip at Gaurikund in the hot springs, which pilgrims traditionally visit. You can also take a dip in Yamunotri's Surya Kund hot spring. At Gangotri, pilgrims bathe in the Bhagirathi River. During the final leg of your journey, you can take a holy dip in the Tapt Kund before entering the Badrinath temple.

Places to Visit During Chardham Yatra

• Haridwar: Starting point with Har Ki Pauri (famous for evening Ganga Aarti), Mansa Devi Temple, and Chandi Devi Temple.
• Yamunotri: At 3,291 m, features the Yamunotri Temple and Surya Kund hot spring where devotees cook rice as Prasad.
• Uttarkashi: Gateway to Gangotri, home to Kashi Vishwanath Temple and Shakti Mata Temple with its massive mythological Trishul (trident).
• Gangotri: At 3,048 m on the Bhagirathi River. Gaumukh Glacier (source of the Ganges) is 18 km further—a separate trekking destination.
• Guptkashi: Gateway to Kedarnath, known for Ardhnarishwar Temple and Manikarnika Kund.
• Kedarnath: At 3,583 m, home to one of the 12 Jyotirlingas. Accessible by 16 km trek from Gaurikund or helicopter. Visit Shankaracharya Samadhi, Bhairav Nath Temple, and Vasuki Tal nearby.
• Badrinath: At 3,133 m, dedicated to Lord Vishnu. Attractions include Tapt Kund (hot spring), Brahma Kapal (ancestor rituals), Mana Village (last Indian settlement before Tibet), Vyas Gufa, and Bhim Pul.

Travel Tips & Practical Advice

• The Himalayan weather remains very cold even in summer, especially at Kedarnath and Badrinath. Pack enough warm clothing including thermals, a fleece jacket, and a windproof outer layer.
• If you have any pre-existing condition such as high blood pressure, asthma, or heart problems, get yourself checked with your doctor before booking. Declare health conditions at the time of booking.
• Carry important medicines for common issues such as headaches, stomach disorders, and body aches. Carry prescribed medications in case you have specific health concerns.
• Altitude Acclimatization: Kedarnath (3,583 m) and Badrinath (3,133 m) are high-altitude sites where first-time visitors often experience altitude-related symptoms such as headaches, nausea, and fatigue. Acclimatization helps: arrive a day early if possible, drink plenty of water, and move at a comfortable pace on day one. Consult your doctor beforehand about altitude management strategies and carry any recommended medications.
• Physical Fitness: Given the demanding nature—including Kedarnath trek (16 km each way) and Yamunotri trek (6 km each way)—build stamina through regular exercise before travel. Pony and doli services are available at both starting points if you cannot trek on foot.
• Avoid traveling in the rainy season (July-August) as there is high risk of landslides on this route.
• Book your Chardham package from Haridwar at least 6-8 weeks in advance, especially if traveling in the peak tourist season (May-June).
• Before entering the shrines, remove your shoes. Follow all guidelines and rules at each temple.

Accommodation options vary by location and altitude. Most towns have budget guesthouses and mid-range hotels, plus GMVN (Garhwal Mandal Vikas Nigam) government lodges.

At Kedarnath (the highest point), options are limited to tents, Dharamshalas, and basic camps. Badrinath has significantly better infrastructure with good-quality hotels offering more amenities. Our package pre-books verified hotels at each stop, removing the uncertainty of finding accommodation.
