Yamunotri Temple

The Holy Dham of Yamunotri is flanked by lush, green rolling hills along with a backdrop of a silver cascading waterfall. As the name suggests this holy shrine is dedicated to goddess Yamuna and it also functions as the commencement point for The Char Dham Yatra Journey. The only way to reach Yamunotri Temple is via trekking your way to the main temple site which is 6 km, but the resulting spirituality and view are impeccable. The location of the temple marks the emergence point of the holy river of Yamuna.

Surya Kund

This thermal hot water spring gets its name from the gently flowing river of Yamuna that makes its way from right next to it. The temperature inside this hot water spring can go up to a scorching temperature of 88 degrees Celsius. The holy Prasad that is distributed inside the temple is prepared here which includes the preparation of rice and potatoes inside the boiling water. After presenting this Prasad at the temple to the presiding deity it is then distributed amongst the devotees visiting who take it home.

Hanuman Chatti

Situated right on the confluence of the rivers of Hanuman Ganga and Yamuna, this holy place is located 13 km from Yamunotri Temple. Initially, this was the point from where the trek to the temple began. However, with new jeepable roads, the starting point has moved closer to Janki Chatti. Hanuman Chatti is a popular stopover for essentials and supplies. It’s also a base for treks to Darwa Top and Dodital.

Saptarishi Kund

Sitting peacefully 10 km from Yamunotri, Saptarishi Kund is a pristine high-altitude glacial lake accessible only via a 2–3 day trek. This gleaming blue lake is steeped in mythological significance as it is believed that seven great sages (Saptarishis) meditated here. The rocky, challenging path is perfect for nature lovers and experienced trekkers seeking serenity and natural beauty.

Janki Chatti

Janki Chatti, at an elevation of 2,650 meters, is known for its natural thermal hot springs and stunning mountain surroundings. It now serves as the starting point for the 6 km trek to Yamunotri Temple. Pilgrims often stop here for rest, supplies, or simply to enjoy the scenic beauty and healing waters before beginning the spiritual journey.

Kharsali

Located near Yamunotri, Kharsali is known as the winter seat of Goddess Yamuna. When the main temple closes for winter, the idol is brought here. Formerly known as Kushimath, Kharsali is a quiet hamlet ideal for picnics and peaceful getaways. Snow-covered in winter, it’s a must-visit for anyone near Yamunotri. A short 1 km trek from Janki Chatti leads to this sacred village.

Barkot (Badkot)

Barkot is a charming village located just 46 km from Yamunotri. Nestled at 1,220 meters above sea level, it’s surrounded by rhododendron and oak forests and offers breathtaking views of the Bandarpoonch range. It serves both as a spiritual and adventure base with amenities like ATMs, petrol stations, and guesthouses. It’s perfect for both pilgrims and trekking enthusiasts alike.

Dodital

Dodital is a freshwater lake perched at 3,024 meters, known for its population of Dodi fish. The lake marks the origin of Assi Ganga which later merges into Bhagirathi. The easy-to-moderate trekking trail makes it a great family-friendly destination. Its serene waters and surrounding forests provide an excellent retreat into nature.

Dayara Bugyal

Perfect for beginner trekkers, Dayara Bugyal is one of the most scenic alpine meadows located at an elevation of 3,048 meters. The trek starts from the village of Barsu and is known for its panoramic forest trails and sweeping grassy pastures. During winters, it becomes a ski destination with snow-covered landscapes ideal for adventure sports lovers.

Raithal Village

Raithal is a tranquil village in the Uttarkashi district located at 1,800 meters above sea level. It serves as the base camp for the Dayara Bugyal trek.
