Travel Tips for Do Dham Yatra by Car
Here are some pointers you might find useful:
- Keep Fuel Tank Full: Fuel stations are not very common in the hilly areas, therefore, fill your tank whenever possible. The stations are located at Rudraprayag, Guptkashi, and Joshimath. Do not forget to fill up here.
- Choose the Right Vehicle: Take a vehicle to the hills that is sturdy and has strong brakes. An SUV is a good choice.
- Plan Ahead: Check the weather and road conditions before you go, as the weather in the hills is quite unpredictable. The best time to visit is usually from May to October.
- Permits: Make sure you have any required permits, especially if you plan to trek to places like Valley of Flowers or Hemkund Sahib, which require special permission.
- Fitness: Be prepared for some walking or trekking at the Do Dhams. To build your stamina, start exercising at least a month or two before the trip. It's good to be in decent shape for the journey.
- Altitude: Both Badrinath and Kedarnath are located at high altitudes. So, acclimatize properly and take it slow to avoid altitude sickness.
- Clothes and Gear: Pack warm clothes and rain gear as there's cold weather at the Dhams. Good shoes are important too, especially for trekking.
- Transport: Arrange your travel in advance, whether by car, bus, or helicopter (for Kedarnath). During the peak season, their slots quickly fill up.
- Accommodation: Book your stays early, especially in Badrinath and Kedarnath during busy times. It's hard to find a decent hotel when the pilgrimage season begins.
- Respect: Follow the customs at the temples and dress modestly. Also, do not click photos once you're inside the temple.
