Legend of Badrinath

According to Hindu belief, Lord Vishnu meditated at Badrinath for thousands of years. The valley was very cold, but he was so deep in meditation that he did not notice. His consort, Goddess Lakshmi, could not bear to see him like this, so she took the form of a Badri (berry) tree to shield him from the Himalayan cold. When Lord Vishnu learnt of this, he was pleased with her devotion. He named the place Badrikashram after her, and he came to be known as Badrinath, the Lord of Badri.

Delhi to Badrinath Distance, Route and Travel Time

Badrinath is about 530 km from Delhi by road, according to the Chamoli district administration. The pure driving time is around 14 to 16 hours. Add meal breaks, traffic in Haridwar and Rishikesh, and roadwork on the hill sections, and a one-day drive stops being realistic. That is why our itinerary breaks the journey at Haridwar and Rudraprayag. The route runs from Delhi to Haridwar and Rishikesh, then follows the Ganga and the Alaknanda through Devprayag, Srinagar, Rudraprayag, Karnaprayag, Chamoli and Joshimath (officially renamed Jyotirmath). The 45 km stretch from Joshimath to Badrinath is prone to landslides in the monsoon. All distances on this page are approximate and can change slightly with the route and your pickup point.

Best Time for Badrinath Yatra

Badrinath Temple stays open for about six months a year. In 2026, the temple doors opened on 23 April. The closing date is announced on Vijayadashami (Dussehra) and usually falls in November. Within this window, choose a time with pleasant weather and less rain.

Badrinath Yatra Registration 2026

Registration is mandatory for every pilgrim on the Char Dham Yatra, even if you are visiting only Badrinath, and it is free. Register on the official portal (registrationandtouristcare.uk.gov.in) or the Tourist Care Uttarakhand app with your mobile number and one ID: Aadhaar, Voter ID, driving licence or passport. You get a QR code, which is checked at the verification counter at the Badrinath entry gate. Offline registration counters are listed on the portal at Haridwar (Rahi Hotel and the railway station), Rishikesh (ISBT and the Gurdwara), Rudraprayag, Karnaprayag, Joshimath and Badrinath itself. For the 2026 season, the Garhwal Commissioner's office approved a rule that stops mobile phones and cameras beyond the Singhdwar, the main gate about 100 m before the sanctum. Deposit counters were ordered at the Singhdwar, but leaving your phone at the hotel saves time in the queue.
