Badrinath 2026 Opening & Closing Dates
The Badrinath Dham opens every year in late April or early May on an auspicious date announced by the temple committee (Devasthanam Board). Plan your Badrinath Yatra from Haridwar accordingly:
| Temple | Altitude | Opens 2026 | Closes 2026 (Tentative) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Badrinath | 3,133 m | 23 April 2026 | ~13 November 2026 |
Closing date is announced on Vijayadashami (Dussehra). Badrinath typically closes in the second or third week of November, before winter snowfall blocks the roads completely.
Best Time to Visit Badrinath
The best time for the Badrinath Yatra is May-June and September to mid-October. Roads are open, weather is manageable, and the temple is fully operational during these months. If you plan to visit in September-October, you will find fewer crowds and hotel rates are generally lower than in May-June.
Avoid July and August. These are monsoon months with heavy rainfall, and the Haridwar-Badrinath route sees frequent landslides and road blockages, particularly between Karnaprayag and Joshimath.
| Season | Temperature | Conditions | Recommended? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Summer (May–June) | 10°C – 18°C | Pleasant days, cool nights, good for darshan and sightseeing | Yes — peak season |
| Monsoon (Jul–Aug) | 8°C – 15°C | Heavy rain, landslide risk, road closures common | Avoid |
| Autumn (Sep–Oct) | 5°C – 14°C | Clear skies, fewer crowds, good visibility | Yes — quieter |
| Winter (Nov–Apr) | -10°C – 5°C | Temple closed, heavy snow, roads shut | Not possible |
History & Significance of Badrinath Dham
Badrinath — also called Badarikashrama or Badri Vishal — is one of the Char Dhams of India and among the 108 Divya Desams (Vishnu temples) mentioned in Vaishnava literature. The temple sits at 3,133 m on the left bank of the Alaknanda River, flanked by the Nar and Narayan mountain ranges, with the Neelkanth Peak (6,596 m) visible in the background.
The Legend of Badrinath
Lord Vishnu is believed to have performed intense penance (Tapasya) at this site. While Vishnu meditated, Goddess Lakshmi, his consort, is said to have sheltered him by taking the form of a Badri (berry/jujube) tree to protect him from the harsh Himalayan weather. This is how the place came to be called Badri van — forest of berry trees — and eventually Badrinath. The name Badrinath literally means 'Lord of Badri'.
Adi Shankaracharya and the Temple
The present Badrinath Temple structure is attributed to Adi Shankaracharya, the 8th-century philosopher (788-820 CE), who revived the temple during his journey through the Himalayas. According to tradition, Shankaracharya discovered the black stone idol of Lord Vishnu (made of Shaligram stone) from the Narad Kund in the Alaknanda River and re-installed it in a cave. Over centuries, the shrine was housed in the current temple structure.
Religious Importance
Badrinath is sacred to followers of the Vaishnava tradition and is counted among the Panch Badri — five shrines of Lord Vishnu in the Garhwal Himalayas. The other four are Adi Badri, Yogdhyan Badri, Bhavishya Badri, and Vriddha Badri. Badrinath is also associated with the Mahabharata — the Pandavas are believed to have passed through this region on their way to heaven (Swargarohini).
The temple also holds the Maha Abhishek puja — a sacred ritual performed at 4:30 AM — and the Shayan Aarti every evening before the temple closes. Both these rituals are specific to Badrinath and cannot be experienced at any other pilgrimage site.

Badrinath Temple — Key Facts
Badrinath Temple is a Vaishnavite shrine dedicated to Lord Vishnu in his meditating form. The main deity — Lord Badri Vishal — is a black stone (Shaligram) idol, approximately 1 metre tall, depicted in Padmasana (sitting cross-legged) posture. The idol is one of the Swayambhu manifestations — believed to be self-manifested and not man-made.
Temple Architecture
The temple has a striking facade painted in green, white, and grey with gold accents. The main gate — Singhdwar — is flanked by stone carvings. The temple complex has three levels: the Sabha Mandap (assembly hall), the Darshan Mandap (prayer hall), and the Garbhagriha (inner sanctum) where the main idol is placed. The colorful Garhwali architecture of the temple stands out clearly against the grey mountain backdrop.
Badrinath Temple Timings
The temple operates on a seasonal schedule. During the Yatra season (May to November):
- Morning Abhishek Puja: 4:30 AM
- Temple opens for general Darshan: 6:00 AM
- Afternoon break: 1:00 PM – 3:00 PM (entry restricted)
- Evening Darshan: 3:00 PM – 9:00 PM
- Shayan Aarti (closing ceremony): 8:30 PM – 9:00 PM (temple closes after this)
The Maha Abhishek puja (4:30 AM) is the most sought-after ritual — the idol is bathed with Panchamrit (milk, curd, ghee, honey, and sugar) in the presence of a small group. This requires advance booking at the temple counter.
Puja Booking at Badrinath
Special pujas — Abhishek, Rudrabhishek, and other rituals — can be booked in advance at the temple website: badrinath-kedarnath.gov.in. In-person bookings are available at the temple puja counter on arrival. The standard Darshan is free of charge. Special/VIP Darshan passes are available on request through us.
Places to Visit near Badrinath
The Badrinath area has several sacred and natural spots within a few kilometres of the main temple. Here are the key places covered on the tour:
Tapt Kund
A natural thermal spring on the bank of the Alaknanda River, just below the Badrinath Temple. The water temperature is around 45°C. It is customary for pilgrims to take a dip in Tapt Kund before entering the temple for Darshan. The hot spring is believed to have medicinal properties. A separate Tapt Kund is designated for men and women.
Narad Kund
A small pool formed near Tapt Kund in the Alaknanda River. According to tradition, this is the spot from which Adi Shankaracharya retrieved the Shaligram stone idol of Lord Vishnu and installed it in the Badrinath Temple. The Kund is named after Sage Narada.
Brahma Kapal
A flat, rocky platform on the bank of the Alaknanda River, about 100 m from the Badrinath Temple. Brahma Kapal is considered one of the most important sites for Pind-Daan — the Hindu ritual of offering food and water to departed ancestors. Many families come specifically to Badrinath to perform this ancestor ritual at Brahma Kapal.
Mana Village
Mana is 3 km from Badrinath and is the last inhabited village on the Indian side before the Indo-Tibetan border. The village is home to the Bhotiya tribe, who follow a semi-nomadic lifestyle, descending to lower areas in winter. Key sites in Mana: Vyas Gufa, Ganesh Gufa, Bhim Pul, and the point where the Saraswati River disappears underground.
Vyas Gufa (Cave) and Ganesh Gufa
Two caves in Mana Village associated with the composition of the Mahabharata. Maharishi Vyas (Ved Vyas) is believed to have composed the epic in the Vyas Gufa. Lord Ganesha wrote it down in the adjacent Ganesh Gufa while Vyas dictated. Both caves are in the same hillside and are accessible on foot.
Bhim Pul
A massive flat rock that forms a natural bridge over the roaring Saraswati River in Mana Village. Bhima of the Pandavas is believed to have placed this rock to help Draupadi cross the river. The spectacle of the Saraswati River rushing through the narrow passage under the rock is one of the more striking natural sights near Badrinath.
Charanpaduka
A sacred rock about 3 km from the Badrinath Temple where an impression resembling Lord Vishnu's footprints is visible. A short uphill walk from the main road leads to this spot, with clear views of the Badrinath valley and the Neelkanth Peak on clear days.
Sheshnetra
A boulder about 1.5 km from the temple, on which an impression resembling the eye of the mythological serpent Sheshnag is visible. Sheshnag is considered the cosmic serpent on which Lord Vishnu rests.
Vasundhara Falls
A tall waterfall about 5 km from Badrinath (2 km are motorable up to Mana, then 3 km on foot). It flows from a height of approximately 400 metres. The site is named after Vasundhara — a form of Lakshmi associated with earth and prosperity. A particularly scenic spot with the Himalayan peaks visible in the background.
Joshimath (Jyotirmath)
Joshimath is the last major town before Badrinath on the NH-7, at 1,890 m above sea level. It is one of the four Maths (religious monasteries) established by Adi Shankaracharya in the 8th century. The key temple here is the Narsingh Temple — the winter abode of Badrinath. When the Badrinath Dham closes in November, the idol of Lord Badri Vishal is ceremonially moved to Joshimath's Narsingh Temple for worship through the winter months. Joshimath is also the base for the Valley of Flowers trek and the Auli ropeway.
Badrinath and the Panch Badri
Badrinath is the main shrine in the Panch Badri — five temples dedicated to Lord Vishnu in the Garhwal Himalayas of Uttarakhand. Each is associated with a different aspect of the deity:
| Badri | Temple | Location | Significance |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vishal Badri | Badrinath Temple | Badrinath (3,133 m) | Main shrine — Lord Vishnu in Padmasana, Char Dham circuit |
| Yogadhyan Badri | Yogadhyan Badri | Pandukeshwar | Lord Vishnu in meditative yogic posture |
| Bhavishya Badri | Bhavishya Badri Temple | Subhain, near Joshimath | Future shrine — where Badrinath is said to shift in a future age |
| Vriddha Badri | Animath Temple | Animath, near Joshimath | Associated with Vishnu in old-age form |
| Adi Badri | Adi Badri Temple Complex | Karnaprayag area | 14-temple complex, original Badrinath shrine established by Shankaracharya |
Devotees who visit all five shrines are believed to have completed the Panch Badri Yatra. Our team can arrange extended itineraries to cover Panch Badri on request.

Travel Tips for Badrinath Yatra from Haridwar
- Register for Yatra before leaving home. Registration at registrationandtouristcare.uk.gov.in is mandatory. Checkpoints on the route check your Yatra Pass.
- Take a dip in Tapt Kund before temple Darshan. This is the customary practice at Badrinath. The thermal spring temperature is around 45°C, and the dip is considered a purification ritual before entering the temple.
- Book in advance for May-June travel. Hotels at Pipalkoti and Badrinath fill up in the first two weeks of May. Book your Haridwar to Badrinath package at least 6-8 weeks ahead.
- Carry warm clothes even in summer. Nights at Badrinath (3,133 m) drop to 5-8°C even in May-June. Thermal wear and a fleece are necessary regardless of the season.
- Walk slowly at Badrinath. The town is at 3,133 m — altitude effects are felt. Headache, slight breathlessness, and fatigue are normal. Rest before rushing to the temple. Drink 3-4 litres of water daily.
- No photography inside the temple. Photography is strictly prohibited inside the temple sanctum. Mobile phones must be switched off or left outside.
- Carry cash from Haridwar. ATMs are available at Joshimath but can run out of cash in peak season. There are no functioning ATMs at Badrinath itself. UPI connectivity at Badrinath is unreliable.
- Check weather before starting each day. Mountain weather changes quickly. Sudden rain or snow is possible even in May and June. Keep a waterproof layer accessible.
