This package combines two of the most significant Shiva pilgrimage sites in Rudraprayag district — Kedarnath and Tungnath — into one 6-day trip from Delhi. They sit in the same district, roughly 50 km apart by road, but feel worlds apart in character. Kedarnath at 3,583 metres is intense, crowded during peak season, and spiritually charged in a way few places in India can match. Tungnath at 3,680 metres is quieter, older in structure, and reached through the stunning meadows of Chopta.

Chopta — the base for the Tungnath trek — is a small settlement surrounded by sweeping alpine meadows that have earned it the nickname 'Mini Switzerland of Uttarakhand'. At 3,030 metres, the panoramic view from Chopta meadows — looking at the Kedarnath, Chaukhamba, Trishul, and Nanda Devi ranges — is the kind of view that travel photographers come back for repeatedly.

This Kedarnath Chopta Tungnath package from Delhi covers the complete circuit: Ganga Aarti at Haridwar, the Kedarnath trek and Darshan, overnight at Chopta, the Tungnath temple trek, and a return through Rishikesh. All meals, verified hotel stays, and private transport are included.

Why This Package Is Ideal for Shaivite Pilgrims

Both Kedarnath and Tungnath are part of the Panch Kedar circuit — five temples marking the spots where Lord Shiva appeared in the form of a bull. Kedarnath (hump of Shiva) and Tungnath (arms of Shiva) are the two most accessible of the five. Completing both in one trip is efficient and deeply meaningful for Shiva devotees.

Tungnath holds an additional distinction — at 3,680 metres, it is recognised as the highest Shiva temple in the world. The stone temple is over 1,000 years old and its architecture reflects classic North Indian Nagara style. The silence and altitude combined make early morning prayers at Tungnath an experience that is hard to match anywhere.

Complete Day-by-Day Itinerary

Morning departure from Delhi. Arrive Haridwar by afternoon. Check into hotel. In the evening, visit Har-Ki-Pauri for the Ganga Aarti. The ritual of hundreds of oil lamps being placed on the river at dusk, against the chanting of Sanskrit shlokas, is a genuinely moving experience that sets the tone for the rest of the yatra. Dinner and overnight Haridwar.

Post-breakfast drive into Garhwal. Pass through Devprayag — where the Bhagirathi and Alaknanda merge to become the Ganga. Continue through Rudraprayag (confluence of Alaknanda and Mandakini). Arrive Guptkashi in the evening. Guptkashi — meaning 'hidden Kashi' — is where Lord Shiva is said to have hidden from the Pandavas. Visit the Vishwanath Temple and Ardhnarishwara Temple in town. Dinner and overnight Guptkashi.

Early morning drive to Gaurikund (30 km from Guptkashi). Gaurikund is the starting point of the Kedarnath trek — mythologically, this is where Goddess Parvati (Gauri) performed penance to win Lord Shiva's love. A brief ritual bath at the Gaurikund hot spring kund before beginning the trek is traditional. The 16 km trek to Kedarnath (3,583m) takes 5-8 hours depending on pace. Pony and palki are available throughout the trail. Arrive Kedarnath by afternoon. Check into hotel. Evening Darshan at Kedarnath Temple — one of India's 12 Jyotirlingas. After Darshan, visit Adi Shankaracharya's Samadhi Sthal at the rear of the temple. Overnight Kedarnath.

Rise before dawn for the morning Abhishek ceremony at Kedarnath (pre-book in advance). Post-ceremony breakfast at the dhaba near the temple. Begin descent trek 16 km to Gaurikund. Drive from Gaurikund toward Chopta via Ukhimath — approximately 90 km, 3 hours. Arrive Chopta (3,030m) in the late afternoon. Check into guesthouse or tent camp. The wide-open meadow at Chopta with the Himalayan range stretching across the horizon makes for a spectacular sunset. Overnight Chopta.

Early morning — begin the 4 km trek from Chopta to Tungnath Temple (3,680m). The trail ascends steeply through rhododendron and oak forest before opening into the final rocky approach to the temple. The ancient Tungnath shrine, said to be over 1,000 years old, houses the arms of Lord Shiva. Darshan. Those with time and energy: continue 500 metres further to Chandrashila Peak (3,830m approx) — the view from here encompasses Nanda Devi, Kedarnath, Badrinath, Chaukhamba, and Trishul peaks in a single panorama. Descend to Chopta. Drive to Rishikesh via Ukhimath and Rudraprayag (approximately 200 km, 5-6 hours). Check in Rishikesh. Overnight.

Morning walk by the Ganga if time permits — Ram Jhula and Laxman Jhula at sunrise are peaceful before the crowds arrive. Post-breakfast drive to Delhi. Airport or railway station drop as per schedule. The Kedarnath Chopta Tungnath Package concludes.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Kedarnath trek is 16 km one way from Gaurikund and is rated Moderate to Difficult. The trail has steep sections but is well-maintained and has tea stalls and dhabas along the route. Pony and palki are available throughout. Most people with average fitness complete it in 5-8 hours.

Significantly easier. Tungnath is only 4 km from Chopta — less than one-fourth the distance of Kedarnath. The trail is steep but short. Most people complete the upward trek in 2-3 hours. It is suitable even for those who found the Kedarnath trek very tiring.

Chandrashila Peak is optional and adds approximately 1-1.5 hours to Day 5. It is not separately charged — if you have the energy and time after Tungnath Darshan, you can continue to Chandrashila. The 360-degree Himalayan panorama from the peak is outstanding and worth the extra effort.

Chopta has basic seasonal guesthouses and tent camps that open during the yatra season. Facilities are simple — clean beds, blankets, and basic meals. There is no luxury accommodation at Chopta. We book the best available property, but guests should expect mountain-basic standards for this one night.

Online booking for Kedarnath Abhishek Puja is available at the official Badrinath-Kedarnath Temple Committee website: badrinath-kedarnath.gov.in. Slots fill up quickly during peak season (May-June). Book at least 30-45 days in advance. Without a booking, you may still be able to attend but cannot be guaranteed a specific timeslot.

Yes. Kedarnath opens in late April or early May (exact date varies by year and is announced by the Kedarnath Temple Committee). Tungnath also opens in May. May is a good month — snowfall has largely cleared, weather is fresh, and the crowd is manageable. Confirm opening dates before booking.
