The pilgrimage is dedicated to Goddess Yamuna which is the second holiest river of India.

The shrine is situated at an elevation of 3048 metres above the sea level. There is a belief that the water of Gangotri is offered to Lord Shiva as it neutralizes the effect of poison in his throat.
