Bhimtal Lake

Visit the largest lake in the Kumaon region of Uttarakhand, which is famous for its serene environs and gorgeous beauty. Although large, it offers a calm setting, spoiling the tourists with its lush greenery and pine-covered slopes. Coming here is really a treat for eyes...and soul!

And while you're there, don't forget to enjoy a boating ride – probably the most sought-after activity in Bhimtal! With boating, you can also reach the Island Aquarium, located right in the middle of the lake. You get to see exotic fish varieties, imported from South Africa, China, and Mexico!

Bhimeshwara Mahadev Temple

This ancient temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. Owing to its grand sculptures and intricate carvings, it steals the heart of the onlookers at first sight. Originally built by Bhima, this temple is believed to fulfill the wishes of the devotees.

Hidimba Parvat

Welcome to this forest-covered hillock, which spoils the travellers with panoramic views of the surrounding hills as well as the Bhimtal Lake itself! As interesting as the name is, the story behind it is equally exciting. The hill is dedicated to the she-demon Hidimba, who was the other wife of Bhima. She resided here and there could be no better place for her to be honoured than Bhimtal, a place dedicated to her husband.

Moreover, it's perfect for light trekking and some downtime birdwatching!

Victoria Dam

Although constructed for flood control purposes, it didn't take long for the dam to become a tourist magnet. Its tranquil atmosphere set amongst the tree cover, makes it a perfect place for relaxing and soak in nature. Made during the British era, the dam gives you beautiful views of the Bhimtal Lake and the surrounding lush greenery. In addition, you can also enjoy the pretty flower gardens, blooming with roses and petunias, on both sides.

Butterfly Research Centre

End with an educational tour to this research facility that is open for guided tours. Relish over 2,500 species of butterflies (even the rare ones) that come in unique patterns and colours. Moreover, learn about their life cycle and evolution.

Fairs & Festivals

Being located in Devbhoomi Uttarakhand, each and every fairs and festivals are celebrated with immense vigour and exuberance. Some of the most significant fairs of Bhimtal include:

  • Basant Panchami - It's celebrated during the onset of spring and lasts till the end of the winter season.
  • Uttarayani - Held on every 14th January annually, it signifies the onset of auspicious times.
  • Phool Dei - Held during the 1st day of every Chaitra month i.e. either March or April.
  • Nanda Devi - Take part in the divine celebration of the Himalayan Goddess which is observed during the month of August or September.

Each of these fairs and festivals are extremely colourful and celebrated with great enthusiasm among the locals. Religious and spiritual people from far and wide visit Bhimtal during these months to be a part of the celebrations.

How to Reach?

There are three major modes of transports to reach Bhimtal. Here's the quick travel summary:

By Air

Fly to Pantnagar airport (58 km away), which is just about an hour's drive from Bhimtal. From the airport, you can find taxis to reach the hill station.

By Rail

Kathgodam is the nearest rail station, only about 22 km away. The Ranikhet Express arrives at Kathgodam each day from Delhi. From Kathgodam, you can travel by private taxi or bus to Bhimtal.

By Road

From Delhi, it's a 7-8 hour drive. You can find regular buses from Dehradun, Haldwani, Kathgodam, in addition to Delhi.

Best Time to Visit Bhimtal

Summer (March – June)

These months are considered to be the best time to visit this hilly escape. With the maximum temperature going till 27 degree Celsius and the minimum temperature dipping till 1 degree Celsius the overall climate in this area remains engulfed in pleasant and comfortable weather conditions.

Monsoon (July – August)

During the monsoon season, Bhimtal spoils you with pleasant weather and cool breeze, especially during early mornings and evenings. Moreover, it's an ideal time to relax in the backdrop of natural scenery and clear skies.

Winter (September – February)

The winter months at Bhimtal are cold and chilly, with the average temperatures ranging between 15 to -3 degree Celsius. However, it's also a high time to enjoy windy weather and lush greenery.

  • Legends state that Bhima of Pandava fame built a temple of Lord Shiva on the banks of the Lake while the brothers were traversing the country during their Vanvas period. The old temple no longer exists but in its place, you can find a temple that dates back to the 17th century.
  • Bhimtal was an important stop on the historic silk route and the road still exists, with the route following a path that is accessible via Kathgodam leading onto Nepal.
  • It’s situated just 22 km from Nainital, serving as a popular excursion point to the popular hill station and other nearby scenic places.
