How to Reach Char Dham

By Air: The nearest airport is Jolly Grant Airport, Dehradun — approximately 52 km from Rishikesh and 90 km from Haridwar. We offer direct airport pickup from Jolly Grant to start your Chardham car rental journey seamlessly.

By Helicopter: Reach Sahastradhara Helipad in Dehradun and take a flight. The nearest helipads to Kedarnath, Badrinath, Yamunotri, and Gangotri are Phata Helipad, Badrinath Helipad, Kharsali Helipad, and Harshil Civil Helipad respectively.

By Rail: The nearest railway station is Haridwar Railway Station. From Haridwar, the Dhams are 180–330 km away depending on which Dham — Yamunotri base is ~180 km, Badrinath is ~330 km. Haridwar is well-connected from Delhi (3–4 hrs via Shatabdi Express).

By Road: You can hire a cab or travel by bus (both government and private run on this route) from your city.

2026 Important: Uttarakhand government registration is mandatory for all Char Dham Yatra pilgrims. Register at registrationandtouristcare.uk.gov.in to receive your Yatra ePass (URN). Places to Visit during Chardham Yatra

Joshimath

Joshimath is a picturesque town in Uttarakhand, situated at an altitude of 1,890 m in the Chamoli district. It serves as the winter seat of Lord Badrinath and is an important base camp for the Badrinath Yatra, Valley of Flowers, and Auli ski resort. The Adi Shankaracharya Math and the Narasimha Temple are key religious sites here.

Gaurikund

Gaurikund is the last motor point on the Kedarnath route, at an elevation of around 1,982 m. This is where your car drops you for the Kedarnath trek. The 16 km trek to Kedarnath temple begins from here. Gaurikund has hot springs (Tapt Kund) where pilgrims take a ritual dip before proceeding.

Rishikesh

Rishikesh, the Yoga Capital of the World, is a spiritual town on the banks of the Ganga — 24 km from Haridwar. A popular pre-Yatra base for pilgrims, with ashrams, temples, and the famous Ganga Aarti at Triveni Ghat. Car rental pickup from Rishikesh hotels and ashrams is available.

Guptkashi

Guptkashi is a sacred town at 1,319 m on the Kedarnath route, dedicated to Lord Shiva. It houses the ancient Vishwanath Temple and Ardh Narishwar Temple. Guptkashi serves as the overnight halt before the Kedarnath trek.

Harsil

Harsil is a serene Himalayan village at 2,745 m, located on the Gangotri route along the Bhagirathi River. It is known for its apple orchards, dense forests, and peaceful atmosphere — a popular overnight halt on the Gangotri Yatra.

Chopta

Known as the "Mini Switzerland of Uttarakhand," Chopta is at 2,680 m and is the base for the Tungnath trek — home to the world's highest Shiva temple (Tungnath, 3,680 m). Add-on from the Chardham circuit at extra charge.

Haridwar

Haridwar — one of the seven sacred cities in Hinduism — is the gateway to the Char Dham Yatra. The Har Ki Pauri Ganga Aarti, the Mansa Devi and Chandi Devi temples, and the numerous ashrams make Haridwar a meaningful start to the pilgrimage. Most Chardham car rental packages begin and end at Haridwar.

Where Your Car Can Take You — Motor Points 2026

Dham Last Motor Point Distance to Temple Alternative
Yamunotri Janki Chatti 6 km trek on foot / pony Pony or palki available
Gangotri Gangotri Temple — car reaches gate Direct — no trek
Kedarnath Sonprayag (private vehicles) / Gaurikund (shared vehicles) 16 km trek from Gaurikund Helicopter from Phata, Guptkashi, or Sirsi
Badrinath Badrinath Temple — car reaches gate Direct — no trek

For Yamunotri and Kedarnath, your hired car waits at the motor point while you complete the darshan. Save your driver's number before beginning the trek — communication is essential at these points.

Best Time to Travel

The Chardham Yatra season starts in late April (Akshaya Tritiya) and continues till October. The shrines are closed before winter snow. The best periods are May–June and September–October.

  • May – June: Ideal climate for travel, but crowded. Book car rental 30–60 days in advance for this window.
  • July – August (Monsoon): Travel is possible but there is a high risk of landslides and road closures. Not recommended for first-time pilgrims or senior citizens.
  • September – October: Clear skies, post-monsoon peace, fewer crowds. Book 15–20 days in advance. Best for comfortable, uncrowded Yatra.

Things to Do During Chardham Yatra

Attend Aarti and Seek Blessings

Attending the morning and evening Aarti at each Dham is the spiritual core of the pilgrimage. The Ganga Aarti at Haridwar before departure, and the Aarti at Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinath — each has its own distinct atmosphere and devotional energy.

Trekking

The Char Dham route offers several trekking opportunities — the Yamunotri trek (6 km from Janki Chatti), the Kedarnath trek (16 km from Gaurikund), and optional treks to Tungnath and Valley of Flowers. Your car will wait at the motor points.

Photography

The Garhwal Himalayas, alpine meadows, river confluences (Devprayag, Rudraprayag), and the high-altitude temples offer exceptional photography opportunities. Devbhoomi Uttarakhand is one of the most visually rich pilgrimage destinations in India.

Local Cuisines to Try

Try the local cuisines along the Chardham route that will satisfy your palate with authentic Garhwali and Kumaoni flavours:

  • Kumaoni Raita — creamy yogurt with cucumber and local spices
  • Jhangora ki Kheer — Himalayan millet pudding, a local sweet specialty
  • Aloo ke Gutke — spiced potatoes cooked in local style, a Garhwali staple
  • Kafuli — spinach and fenugreek curry, a nutritious Garhwali dish
  • Chainsoo — roasted black gram dal, full of protein for trekking days
  • Bal Mithai — local sweet from Kumaon, available at Haridwar and Rishikesh

History of Char Dham Temples

Yamunotri

The Yamunotri Temple was built by the King of Tehri, Naresh Sudarshan Shah, in 1839. It is the first stop on the Char Dham Yatra. Surya Kund, an important hot spring near the temple, is used by pilgrims to cook offerings (rice and potatoes wrapped in cloth) in the boiling water.

Gangotri

The Gangotri Temple was built by Amar Singh Thapa, a Gurkha general, in the early 19th century. It is believed that the Ganga descended to earth here after Bhagirath's meditation, to absolve the sins of humanity and guide the souls of his ancestors to moksha.

Kedarnath

Kedarnath Temple is believed to have been built by the Pandavas to atone for the sins of killing their kinsmen in the Kurukshetra war. Lord Shiva, wishing to avoid the Pandavas, disguised himself as a bull and dived into the earth at Kedarnath. The hump of the bull remained above ground and became the sacred Jyotirlinga. The current temple structure is attributed to Adi Shankaracharya (8th century CE).

Badrinath

Lord Badri's idol was found in the Alaknanda River by Adi Shankaracharya, who placed it in a cave near the Tapt Kund hot spring. The temple was reconstructed by the Garhwal King in the 17th century. The backdrop of Neelkanth Peak makes Badrinath one of the most visually majestic of the four Dhams.

Tips for a Safe Chardham Yatra

  • Pack light woolens even in summer — nights are chilly in the hills, especially at Kedarnath and Badrinath.
  • Acclimatise properly, especially before Kedarnath. Ascend at your own pace — altitude sickness can affect anyone.
  • Carry snacks rich in carbohydrates — dry fruits, ORS sachets, chocolates, and energy bars.
  • Pack a first-aid kit with basic medicines like Paracetamol, aspirin, and altitude sickness tablets.
  • Avoid overexertion, especially on trek days to Kedarnath and Yamunotri.
  • Hire pony/palki services at Yamunotri and Kedarnath if needed — no shame in using them, especially for senior pilgrims.
  • Keep a water bottle with you and hydrate regularly. Do not drink tap water.
  • Carry sufficient cash (INR 3,000–5,000) — ATMs are scarce at high-altitude Dham locations. Toll, parking, and pony charges are cash only.
  • Confirm your driver's mobile number before beginning any trek (Yamunotri, Kedarnath). Your driver waits at the motor point — save the number before you start.
