Rishikesh is where most Char Dham Yatra journeys begin — and for good reason. Sitting at the foothills of the Garhwal Himalayas, it is the closest railhead and road entry point to all four sacred shrines of Uttarakhand: Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinath. The 2026 Yatra season opens on 19 April. If you are planning this pilgrimage, now is the right time to sort out your package, registration, and dates.

This 11-day package covers the complete Char Dham circuit from Rishikesh — with private AC transport, all meals, hotel stays, priority Darshan assistance, and 2026 Yatra registration support included.

Char Dham Yatra 2026 Opening & Closing Dates

The 2026 pilgrimage season officially begins on 19 April. Both Yamunotri and Gangotri open on Akshaya Tritiya, while Kedarnath and Badrinath open a few days later. Plan your travel dates only after confirming these Kapat timings.

Dham Opening Date 2026 Closing Date 2026 Altitude
Yamunotri 19 April 2026 11 November (Bhai Dooj) 3,291 m
Gangotri 19 April 2026 10 November (Diwali) 3,048 m
Kedarnath 22 April 2026 (8:00 AM) 11 November (Bhai Dooj) 3,553 m
Badrinath 23 April 2026 13 November 2026 3,133 m

After closing, the deity idols are moved to their winter seats: Yamunotri's idol goes to Kharsali, Gangotri to Mukhba, Kedarnath to Ukhimath, and Badrinath to Joshimath — where worship continues through winter.

Char Dham Yatra Registration 2026

Registration is compulsory. Without a valid Yatra e-pass, entry into any of the four dhams is not permitted. The Uttarakhand government made registration mandatory after the 2013 Kedarnath floods for real-time pilgrim tracking and emergency response.

Registration is completely FREE. Online registration for 2026 opened on 6 March 2026.

How to Register (Step-by-Step)

  1. Visit: registrationandtouristcare.uk.gov.in (official Uttarakhand government portal)
  2. Create account using your mobile number — OTP verification required
  3. Fill in: name, Aadhaar number (mandatory in 2026), travel dates, emergency contact
  4. Select the dhams you plan to visit
  5. Download and print your QR-coded e-pass — carry physical copies

Alternative: Send "YATRA" on WhatsApp to 8394833833. Offline counters available at Rishikesh (30 counters) and Haridwar (20 counters) from 17 April 2026. Helpline: 1364 or 0135-1364.

Important: Daily pilgrim caps are enforced at each shrine. Peak season slots fill within hours of opening. Register as soon as you confirm your travel dates — do not wait.

Best Time for Char Dham Yatra

Season Months Weather & Conditions
Peak Season ✓ Late April – June Ideal. Clear skies, 10°C–20°C at dhams, roads fully open. Most popular window.
Monsoon (Avoid) July – August Heavy rains, landslide risk, some road closures. Shorter queues but higher risk.
Post-Monsoon ✓ September – October Excellent. Crystal-clear skies, moderate crowd, pleasant temperatures.
Closing Season November Last-chance visits. Very cold, some facilities closing. Witness the Kapat Bandh ceremony.

Most pilgrims prefer May–June. September–October is a close second and less crowded. Avoid July–August unless you have a flexible itinerary and high risk tolerance.

How to Reach Rishikesh

By Air

Jolly Grant Airport, Dehradun is the nearest airport — 35 km from Rishikesh. Flights connect from Delhi (approx. 1 hr), Mumbai, Bengaluru, and other major cities. Taxi from the airport to Rishikesh takes 45–60 minutes and costs ₹700–₹1,000.

By Train

Haridwar Railway Station (24 km from Rishikesh) has the best rail connectivity — direct trains from Delhi (Shatabdi, Jan Shatabdi, Mussoorie Express), Mumbai, Kolkata, and other major cities. Rishikesh Railway Station itself has limited train services. Haridwar to Rishikesh by taxi costs ₹300–₹500.

By Road

Regular bus and private cab services from Delhi (240 km | 5–6 hrs), Dehradun (42 km | 1 hr), and Haridwar (24 km | 45 min). Delhi to Rishikesh is well-connected via NH-58 and NH-334B.

Tips for Senior Citizens & First-Time Pilgrims

The Char Dham Yatra is deeply meaningful at any age, but it requires realistic planning for older pilgrims.

  • Kedarnath: The 16 km trek at 3,553 m altitude is the most physically demanding part. Helicopter service from Phata, Sersi, or Guptkashi is strongly recommended for those above 65 or with heart, lung, or knee conditions.
  • Yamunotri: 6 km trek from Janki Chatti — steep sections. Pony and palki (doli) services are available and commonly used.
  • Gangotri & Badrinath: Both are accessible by road. These are manageable for most senior pilgrims.
  • Request lower-floor hotel rooms at each halt to avoid stair climbs.
  • Consult your doctor before travel — carry a medical history card and all regular medications.
  • Government health check posts at Sonprayag (Kedarnath route) and Janki Chatti (Yamunotri route) screen pilgrims for altitude fitness. Cooperate fully with officials.

Altitude & Health — What Every Pilgrim Must Know

Three of the four dhams are above 3,000 metres. Altitude sickness (Acute Mountain Sickness / AMS) is a genuine risk, especially for those travelling from low-altitude cities. Symptoms include headache, nausea, dizziness, and breathlessness.

  • Ascend gradually — the itinerary is designed with acclimatisation built in.
  • Drink 3–4 litres of water daily; avoid alcohol.
  • Carry Diamox (consult your doctor before use), paracetamol, and basic altitude medicine.
  • If symptoms are severe, descend immediately — never push through serious AMS.
  • Helicopter evacuation services operate in the Kedarnath area for medical emergencies.

Tour Itinerary

On reaching Rishikesh, you will be greeted and then escorted by our tour representative towards the hotel booked for you in advance. After completing the check-in formalities at the hotel, collect the key to your room and unwind yourself in the comfy hotel room. There is no other schedule for the day and you are free to spend your entire day in leisure so you can visit along the temples located nearby and then move towards Ram Jhula and Laxman Jhula and then conclude your day by relaxing in the pre-booked hotel room.

Enjoy the morning meal of the day in Rishikesh and then leave the hotel after completing the check-out formalities. Our driver will take you to Barkot by an air-conditioned vehicle and this is going to be a long journey but the scenic splendors falling en-route makes it a thrilling and enjoying travel journey. If you wish then you can visit the Kempty waterfalls and then on reaching the destination, you are free to spend the day you wish to.

Kickstart your day with a relishing breakfast and then set out for Yamunotri. Being an annual pilgrimage, Yamunotri is visited by millions of tourists coming from different corners of the world and take a dip into the holy hot water Kund where they cook Prasad to offer the deity. Post Darshan, drive towards Divya Shila and other nearby religious spots and then complete your day by returning to the hotel.

Give a perfect start to your day by binging on the lip-smacking breakfast in the hotel and then drive towards Uttarkashi, the holy town located on the rivers Varuna and Asi. On reaching Uttarkashi, you will be visiting Kashi Vishwanath Temple and then retire yourself in the hotel room and then stay there overnight.

Gorge on the healthy breakfast and then drive towards Gangotri where you will be visiting the holy shrine of River Ganga. It is believed that visiting this holy shrine and taking a dip into the holy river washes away all your committed sins and blesses you with lifelong prosperity and wealth. Post Darshan, head back to the hotel and spend the day in leisure or walk along the nearby areas before you take dinner.

There is no proper schedule for the day except driving towards Sitapur. After completing the check-in formalities, leave from Gangotri and then move straight towards Sitapur where you can spend some peaceful moments and capture a few pictures for your travel frames.

Don’t skip your breakfast early morning as the day is going to be a little longer and requires physical strength. From Sitapur, you will drive towards Gauri Kund via a private vehicle and then on reaching the point, you will start your trek towards this holy shrine dedicated to Lord Shiva. There are several destinations settled in and around Kedarnath so after completing the puja rituals explore these destinations before you drive back to the hotel for overnight stay and dinner.

We believe that the previous day was a little hectic and tiring so we have designed this itinerary in such a way that you can relax well. What you all going to do today is just to reach Sitapur and relax for the day.

You will be served with a healthy breakfast at the hotel so after treating your taste buds gear up yourself to drive towards Badrinath via Joshimath. There are several destinations that you can cover on the way including the popular Narsingh Temple and Shankaracharya Math. Next, complete the puja rituals at Badrinath Dham and then discover the nearby sites like Ganesha Cave, Vyas, Mana Village, etc.

Get up early morning and then drive towards Haridwar where on arrival you will check-into the hotel room and relax for a few hours. There is no fixed schedule for the day so in the evening move towards Har Ki Pauri where you can participate in the grand ceremony of Ganga Aarti and then end the day with a mouth-watering dinner followed by a relaxing overnight stay.

So finally, the trip has come to end with your drive towards Haridwar railway station from where you will catch the train for your journey towards home.

Frequently Asked Questions

It is an 11-day guided pilgrimage covering all four sacred shrines of Uttarakhand — Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinath — starting and ending at Rishikesh. The package includes private AC transport, all meals, hotel stays, priority darshan, and 2026 registration support. Prices start at ₹27,999 per person.

The 2026 season opens on 19 April — Yamunotri and Gangotri open first on Akshaya Tritiya, followed by Kedarnath on 22 April and Badrinath on 23 April. Most Rishikesh-based packages begin running from 19–21 April onward.

Yes. Registration is compulsory for all four dhams. Without a valid e-pass you will not be permitted entry at any shrine. Registration is free — do it at registrationandtouristcare.uk.gov.in. Aadhaar card is mandatory in 2026. Daily pilgrim caps are enforced, so register early.

Our standard package is 11 days / 10 nights, which is the minimum for a comfortable Char Dham circuit from Rishikesh without rushing. Allow 12–14 days if you want buffer for weather delays or additional visits like Hemkund Sahib or Valley of Flowers.

The Kedarnath trek is 16 km one way from Gaurikund (not Sonprayag — private vehicles stop at Sonprayag; shared jeeps cover the last 5 km to Gaurikund). The trail gains approx. 1,500 m altitude to reach Kedarnath at 3,553 m. Helicopter service from Phata or Guptkashi is an available alternative.

Yes, with proper planning. Kedarnath helicopter service is the practical option for seniors above 65 or those with health conditions. Yamunotri has pony and palki services. Gangotri and Badrinath are road-accessible. Our packages include dedicated senior citizen support throughout.

By air: Jolly Grant Airport, Dehradun (35 km). By train: Haridwar Railway Station (24 km) — direct trains from Delhi, Mumbai, and most major cities. By road: Delhi to Rishikesh is 240 km, approximately 5–6 hours via NH-58.

Aadhaar card (mandatory), printed Char Dham e-pass with QR code (carry physical copies), emergency contact details, and medical prescriptions if applicable. Do not rely only on digital copies — mobile signal is weak or absent at several dham locations.

Yes. Helicopter services operate from Phata, Sersi, and Guptkashi to Kedarnath. Book via the official IRCTC portal or the Uttarakhand government's designated booking system. Advance booking is essential during peak season — slots fill weeks ahead. One-way fares range from ₹3,500 to ₹7,500 depending on the service.

Hotel stay (10 nights, double sharing), all meals (breakfast, lunch, dinner), private AC cab for all transfers, tour manager, local guide at Rishikesh, mineral water, parking/toll/fuel, applicable taxes, and Yatra registration assistance. Airfare, pony/palki charges, helicopter cost, and personal expenses are excluded.

Late April to June is peak and best — roads fully open, weather clear. September to October is the second window, with post-monsoon clarity and fewer crowds. Avoid July–August (monsoon) — heavy rains can trigger landslides and road closures.

ATMs exist at Barkot, Uttarkashi, Guptkashi, and Joshimath, but they frequently run out of cash during peak pilgrim season. Carry a minimum of ₹5,000–₹8,000 in cash before heading into the hills. Digital payment acceptance is limited at remote shrine areas.

Cancellations 30+ days before departure: full refund minus processing fee. Cancellations 15–30 days prior: 25–50% penalty. Cancellations within 7 days: no refund. No refund or compensation for disruptions caused by natural calamities, landslides, or weather conditions. Full policy provided at booking.

Yes. Our standard is 11 days, but we offer 10-day, 12-day, and custom itineraries. Extensions to Hemkund Sahib, Valley of Flowers, Panch Kedar, or Adi Badri can be added. Contact us to discuss your requirements.

Both are valid starting points, and the distance between them is only 24 km. Rishikesh, however, sits closer to the Himalayan foothills and offers a quieter, more spiritually immersive start. Jolly Grant Airport (35 km) makes Rishikesh slightly more convenient for air travellers. Many pilgrims prefer to do the evening aarti at Triveni Ghat in Rishikesh before heading out the next morning.
