Rishikesh is where most Char Dham Yatra journeys begin — and for good reason. Sitting at the foothills of the Garhwal Himalayas, it is the closest railhead and road entry point to all four sacred shrines of Uttarakhand: Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinath. The 2026 Yatra season opens on 19 April. If you are planning this pilgrimage, now is the right time to sort out your package, registration, and dates.
This 11-day package covers the complete Char Dham circuit from Rishikesh — with private AC transport, all meals, hotel stays, priority Darshan assistance, and 2026 Yatra registration support included.
Char Dham Yatra 2026 Opening & Closing Dates
The 2026 pilgrimage season officially begins on 19 April. Both Yamunotri and Gangotri open on Akshaya Tritiya, while Kedarnath and Badrinath open a few days later. Plan your travel dates only after confirming these Kapat timings.
| Dham | Opening Date 2026 | Closing Date 2026 | Altitude |
|---|---|---|---|
| Yamunotri | 19 April 2026 | 11 November (Bhai Dooj) | 3,291 m |
| Gangotri | 19 April 2026 | 10 November (Diwali) | 3,048 m |
| Kedarnath | 22 April 2026 (8:00 AM) | 11 November (Bhai Dooj) | 3,553 m |
| Badrinath | 23 April 2026 | 13 November 2026 | 3,133 m |
After closing, the deity idols are moved to their winter seats: Yamunotri's idol goes to Kharsali, Gangotri to Mukhba, Kedarnath to Ukhimath, and Badrinath to Joshimath — where worship continues through winter.
Char Dham Yatra Registration 2026
Registration is compulsory. Without a valid Yatra e-pass, entry into any of the four dhams is not permitted. The Uttarakhand government made registration mandatory after the 2013 Kedarnath floods for real-time pilgrim tracking and emergency response.
Registration is completely FREE. Online registration for 2026 opened on 6 March 2026.

Best Time for Char Dham Yatra
| Season | Months | Weather & Conditions |
|---|---|---|
| Peak Season ✓ | Late April – June | Ideal. Clear skies, 10°C–20°C at dhams, roads fully open. Most popular window. |
| Monsoon (Avoid) | July – August | Heavy rains, landslide risk, some road closures. Shorter queues but higher risk. |
| Post-Monsoon ✓ | September – October | Excellent. Crystal-clear skies, moderate crowd, pleasant temperatures. |
| Closing Season | November | Last-chance visits. Very cold, some facilities closing. Witness the Kapat Bandh ceremony. |
Most pilgrims prefer May–June. September–October is a close second and less crowded. Avoid July–August unless you have a flexible itinerary and high risk tolerance.
How to Reach Rishikesh
By Air
Jolly Grant Airport, Dehradun is the nearest airport — 35 km from Rishikesh. Flights connect from Delhi (approx. 1 hr), Mumbai, Bengaluru, and other major cities. Taxi from the airport to Rishikesh takes 45–60 minutes and costs ₹700–₹1,000.
By Train
Haridwar Railway Station (24 km from Rishikesh) has the best rail connectivity — direct trains from Delhi (Shatabdi, Jan Shatabdi, Mussoorie Express), Mumbai, Kolkata, and other major cities. Rishikesh Railway Station itself has limited train services. Haridwar to Rishikesh by taxi costs ₹300–₹500.
By Road
Regular bus and private cab services from Delhi (240 km | 5–6 hrs), Dehradun (42 km | 1 hr), and Haridwar (24 km | 45 min). Delhi to Rishikesh is well-connected via NH-58 and NH-334B.
Tips for Senior Citizens & First-Time Pilgrims
The Char Dham Yatra is deeply meaningful at any age, but it requires realistic planning for older pilgrims.
- Kedarnath: The 16 km trek at 3,553 m altitude is the most physically demanding part. Helicopter service from Phata, Sersi, or Guptkashi is strongly recommended for those above 65 or with heart, lung, or knee conditions.
- Yamunotri: 6 km trek from Janki Chatti — steep sections. Pony and palki (doli) services are available and commonly used.
- Gangotri & Badrinath: Both are accessible by road. These are manageable for most senior pilgrims.
- Request lower-floor hotel rooms at each halt to avoid stair climbs.
- Consult your doctor before travel — carry a medical history card and all regular medications.
- Government health check posts at Sonprayag (Kedarnath route) and Janki Chatti (Yamunotri route) screen pilgrims for altitude fitness. Cooperate fully with officials.
Altitude & Health — What Every Pilgrim Must Know
Three of the four dhams are above 3,000 metres. Altitude sickness (Acute Mountain Sickness / AMS) is a genuine risk, especially for those travelling from low-altitude cities. Symptoms include headache, nausea, dizziness, and breathlessness.
- Ascend gradually — the itinerary is designed with acclimatisation built in.
- Drink 3–4 litres of water daily; avoid alcohol.
- Carry Diamox (consult your doctor before use), paracetamol, and basic altitude medicine.
- If symptoms are severe, descend immediately — never push through serious AMS.
- Helicopter evacuation services operate in the Kedarnath area for medical emergencies.
