Frequently Asked Questions

Ans. The trek from Gangotri to Gaumukh is considered moderately difficult to challenging. There are many different terrains along the path. You can expect a relatively easier trek till Chirbasa. However, the trail paths become especially steep and rocky after Bhojwasa. Also, prepare yourself mentally for high-altitude walking and changing weather.

Ans. The best time to visit Gangotri temple and Gaumukh glacier is during May-June and September to October. The weather is clear during this period, and trekking conditions are also stable. Avoid going for trekking in monsoons and winter seasons. In the former, there's a risk of landslides, which is highly dangerous. And in the winters, the Gangotri temple and the trekking paths are closed due to heavy snowfall.

Ans. Yes, obtaining a trekking permit for Gaumukh is mandatory. You need to have a Forest Permit from the Gangotri National Park Authority. You can get it online or visit the Forest Office, Gangotri, personally. Also, keep in mind that only 150 permits are issued in a day.

Ans. Porters are available from Gangotri who can carry your luggage. However, ponies or mules can go only up till certain points and the primary way to cover the Gaumukh trek is by foot only. This is done to preserve the eco-sensitive nature of the Gangotri National Park.

Ans. As the weather in the Himalayas stays cold throughout the year, you must carry warm clothes like woollen sweaters, jackets, muffler, socks, etc. Also, carry with you trekking gear such as trekking shoes, a backpack, and trekking poles. In addition, pack energy bars, torch, water bottles, and essential medicines.
