The Chardham Yatra by helicopter is a 6-day pilgrimage covering all four sacred Dhams — Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinath. The tour starts and ends at Sahastradhara Helipad in Dehradun and includes helicopter transfers between all four Dhams, VIP Darshan, hotel stay, all meals, and local transfers at each stop.
By road, the same Yatra takes 10 to 12 days — involving long mountain drives, two major treks (Kedarnath 16 km, Yamunotri 6 km), and considerable physical strain. The helicopter cuts this down to 6 days, which is why it has become the preferred choice for senior citizens, NRI families, and anyone with limited leave.
Bookings for the 2026 season are open for May-June and September-October. Helicopter slots are limited — each flight carries only 6 passengers — so early booking is important, especially for May travel.

Advantages of Chardham Yatra by Helicopter
Time Saving
The biggest reason people choose helicopter over road is time. A full Chardham circuit by road from Delhi takes 10 to 12 days. By helicopter from Dehradun, the same four Dhams are covered in 5 to 6 days.
Comfortable Travel
The road journey involves back-to-back mountain drives that can stretch to 8 hours in a single day. On a helicopter tour, the longest road segment is the 25 km drive from Harsil to Gangotri Temple. The physical exhaustion of the road Yatra is largely eliminated.
Ideal for People with Mobility Limitations
Two of the four Dhams require trekking — Yamunotri (6 km each way) and Kedarnath (16 km each way). The helicopter route bypasses both — from Kharsali helipad, a doli carries you to Yamunotri, and from Kedarnath helipad, the temple is just 400 metres away.
Stunning Aerial Views
Flying between the Dhams gives you a completely different view of the Garhwal Himalayas — one that road travel simply cannot offer.
VIP Darshan
All Chardham helicopter packages include VIP Darshan at all four temples. During peak season in May, general queues at Kedarnath and Badrinath can run for 2 to 3 hours.
Ideal for Family Pilgrimages
When a family has members of very different ages and fitness levels, the road Yatra can be a challenge. The helicopter tour keeps everyone together with the same schedule, short transfers, and hotels close to helipads.
Who Should Choose Chardham Yatra by Helicopter
Senior Citizens and Elderly Pilgrims
This is the most common reason people book helicopter packages. The 16 km Kedarnath trek at an altitude of 3,583 m is hard even for young, fit travellers. The helicopter removes both the Kedarnath trek and the Yamunotri trek completely.
Families with Children and Elderly Parents
Managing a family trip where some members are 70 and others are 7 is much easier on a helicopter tour. There are no back-to-back 8-hour mountain drives.
NRIs with Limited Days in India
A road Chardham Yatra from Delhi takes 10 to 12 days minimum. The helicopter package completes all four Dhams in 6 days from Dehradun.
Working Professionals with Limited Leave
If you cannot take more than 6 to 7 days off, the road Yatra simply does not fit. The helicopter package is the only way to do a complete Char Dham Yatra in that time.
Travellers with Health Conditions
Anyone with high blood pressure, heart conditions, asthma, diabetes, or mobility restrictions should seriously consider the helicopter route. Physical exertion is minimal.
Chardham Yatra by Helicopter vs Road — Which Should You Choose
| Factor | By Helicopter | By Road |
|---|---|---|
| Total Duration | 5-6 days from Dehradun | 10-12 days from Delhi or Haridwar |
| Physical Effort | Minimal — short walks, no major treks | High — 16 km Kedarnath trek, daily long drives |
| Cost | Rs.2,30,000+ per person (premium) | Rs.40,000-50,000 per person |
| Temple Darshan | VIP access — no long queues | General queue — can be 2-3 hours in peak season |
| Best For | Seniors, NRIs, families, health limitations | Budget travellers, explorers, those with time |
| Weather Risk | Flight cancellations in poor visibility | Landslide risk, road closures in monsoon |
| Flexibility | Fixed schedule — no date changes once booked | More flexible — can adjust stays and detours |
If your primary concern is completing the Yatra safely and comfortably within limited time, the helicopter tour makes sense despite the higher cost. If budget is the priority and you are physically fit with time to spare, the road trip gives you a richer, more exploratory experience of Uttarakhand.
Best Time for Yatra
May to June — Peak Season
May is the most popular month for a reason. The temples have just opened, the roads and helipads are fully operational, and the weather is stable enough for regular flying. Daytime temperatures at the Dhams range from 5°C to 20°C — cold enough to need warm clothes but clear enough for reliable helicopter operations. The downside is crowd — May is peak season, and helicopter slots fill up 2 to 3 months in advance. Book early.
June (first half) is also a good option. Weather holds, crowds thin slightly as the school season ends, and slots are somewhat easier to find. By mid-June, monsoon begins to build in Garhwal and visibility drops, increasing cancellation risk.
September to October — Post-Monsoon Season
October does not get as much attention as May but is genuinely one of the better months to do the helicopter Yatra. The monsoon has cleared by late September. Skies are clear, visibility is excellent, and pilgrim numbers are significantly lower than in May. Temperatures are cooler — nights at Kedarnath and Badrinath drop near zero — but daytime conditions are good for flying.
The main thing to watch in October is the temple closing dates. Kedarnath closes on Bhai Dooj (around 11 November in 2026). Gangotri closes on Diwali (~10 November). Badrinath closes around 13 November. If you are planning October travel, confirm the exact closing dates before booking — arriving after a temple has shut is a costly mistake.
Monsoon and Winter — Avoid
July and August are genuinely risky for helicopter travel in Garhwal. Monsoon visibility is poor, cancellations are frequent, and even when flights operate, they can be grounded mid-tour for days due to weather. Once temples close in November, there are no helicopter operations until the next season opens.
Chardham Opening and Closing Dates 2026
The 2026 dates are officially confirmed. Here is the full schedule:
| Temple | Altitude | Opens 2026 | Closes 2026 (Tentative) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Yamunotri | 3,291 m | 19 April (Akshaya Tritiya) | ~11 November (Bhai Dooj) |
| Gangotri | 3,100 m | 19 April (Akshaya Tritiya) | ~10 November (Diwali) |
| Kedarnath | 3,583 m | 22 April | ~11 November (Bhai Dooj) |
| Badrinath | 3,300 m | 23 April | ~13 November |
Closing dates are tentative and announced on Vijayadashami by the temple committees. Confirm before booking any October travel.
History and Significance of Chardham Yatra
The Chardham Yatra is one of the most important pilgrimages in Hinduism — not just for its religious significance but for the centuries of history attached to these four sites in the Garhwal Himalayas.
History
Adi Shankaracharya, the 8th-century Hindu philosopher and saint, is credited with establishing the Chardham circuit in its present form. He discovered the black stone idol of Lord Vishnu in the sacred waters of the Alaknanda River and enshrined it — establishing what is now Badrinath Temple. He also constructed the Kedarnath Temple at its current site, which already held an older shrine associated with the Pandavas.
The four shrines are referenced in ancient Hindu scriptures including the Vishnu Purana, Shiva Purana, and Skanda Purana. The Mahabharata also connects these sites to the Pandavas' journey through the Himalayas after the Kurukshetra war.
Significance
The Chardham Yatra is believed to free pilgrims from the cycle of birth and death and grant Moksha — the ultimate liberation in Hindu belief. Each Dham represents a distinct spiritual quality and has its own mythological significance:
Yamunotri — Karma (Action)
Yamunotri is the source of the Yamuna River and is dedicated to Goddess Yamuna — daughter of Surya (the Sun God) and sister of Yama (the God of Death). She is believed to cleanse visitors of their sins and bless them with a peaceful death.
Gangotri — Bhakti (Devotion)
Gangotri is dedicated to Goddess Ganga and marks the spot where the Ganga is said to have descended to Earth. According to the legend, King Bhagiratha performed intense penance to bring the sacred river down to cleanse the sins of his ancestors. Lord Shiva caught her in his matted locks to prevent the world from being destroyed by her force. Today, a dip in the Bhagirathi River at Gangotri is believed to purify the soul.
Kedarnath — Tapa (Austerity)
Kedarnath is one of the 12 Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva and sits at 3,583 m surrounded by snow-covered peaks. This is the site where Lord Shiva, disguised as a bull, disappeared into the earth leaving his hump behind — which is now worshipped at the main shrine. The Pandavas are said to have come here to atone for the sins of the Kurukshetra war.
Badrinath — Jnana (Knowledge)
Badrinath is dedicated to Lord Vishnu, who is said to have meditated here under a Badri (berry) tree. The name of the town itself — Badrinath — comes from this. The Badrinath Temple is one of the 108 Divya Desams, sacred Vishnu temples mentioned in Tamil Vaishnava literature.
Cost of Chardham Yatra by Helicopter
Pricing for Chardham Yatra by helicopter depends on the tour operator, the package duration, hotel category, and inclusions. As a general guide:
- Standard 6-day all-inclusive package: Rs.2.3 lakhs to Rs.2.5 lakhs per person
- Luxury 6-day package (premium hotels, single occupancy): Rs.3 lakhs to Rs.5 lakhs per person
- Same-day Do Dham (Kedarnath + Badrinath only): from Rs.1.35 lakhs per person
Our current 6-day package is priced at Rs.2,30,000 per person on twin sharing. This includes helicopter transfers, VIP Darshan, hotel accommodation, all meals, doli at Yamunotri, and local transfers at all stops. GST (5%) is included in the package price.
Chardham Helicopter Flight Schedule — Day-wise Timings
All helicopter flights operate on a fixed daily schedule. Passengers must be at the helipad at least 30-60 minutes before departure. Timings may shift due to weather, ATC clearance, or VVIP movements in the area.
| Day | From | To | ETD | ETA |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Day 2 | Dehradun — Sahastradhara Helipad | Kharsali Helipad (Yamunotri base) | 6:00 AM | 6:30 AM |
| Day 3 | Kharsali Helipad | Harsil Helipad (Gangotri base) | 6:30 AM | 7:00 AM |
| Day 4 | Harsil Helipad | Sersi / Phata Helipad | 7:00 AM | 7:30 AM |
| Day 4 | Sersi / Phata — shuttle | Kedarnath Helipad | 10:00 AM | 10:07 AM |
| Day 5 | Sersi / Phata | Badrinath Helipad | 8:00 AM | 8:30 AM |

Helipads Used in Chardham Yatra by Helicopter
Many passengers are surprised to learn that the helipad is not right next to the temple — in some cases it requires a short drive or even a trek from the landing point. Here is the full picture:
| Dham | Helipad | Altitude | Distance to Temple |
|---|---|---|---|
| Base | Sahastradhara, Dehradun | 700 m | Starting and ending point for all flights |
| Yamunotri | Kharsali Helipad | 2,700 m | 6 km to Yamunotri Temple — doli/pony service provided |
| Gangotri | Harsil Helipad | 2,740 m | 25 km by car to Gangotri Temple (approx. 50 minutes) |
| Kedarnath | Sersi / Phata (shuttle base) | 1,980 m | 7-minute shuttle flight to Kedarnath Helipad |
| Kedarnath | Kedarnath Helipad | 3,583 m | 400 metre walk to Kedarnath Temple (~10 minutes) |
| Badrinath | Badrinath Helipad | 3,300 m | 1 km by car to Badrinath Temple (~5 minutes) |
The Kedarnath sector is the most complex. A government regulation requires all passengers to first fly from Dehradun to Sersi or Phata helipad, then take a separate shuttle helicopter to Kedarnath. Waiting time at Sersi/Phata for the shuttle can range from 10 minutes to 2 hours depending on slot availability. This is not within our control — it is a government-managed operation.
