Hemkund Sahib is perhaps the most sacred of all Sikh pilgrimages. Hemkund translates to bowl of snow. As its name suggests, the place remains snowbound half of the year (October – April). At the onset of summer in the months of April and May, Sikh pilgrims and soldiers of army arrive at the path and clear them to make it accessible for pilgrims. This is in accordance with the concept of ‘kar seva’, selfless service exemplified in Sikh Tradition.
What if you could remit the perils of traversing three-fourths of the path on foot? What if the 13 km difficult trek from Govindghat to Ghangaria can be replaced with a 5-10 min helicopter journey over the same distance? Does the prospect interest you? If yes, you might want to opt for our Hemkund Yatra by Helicopter Packages. Read along to find out more about the destination, its history, and our tour itinerary.
Hemkund Sahib – History, Importance
Hemkund Sahib finds its mention in Dasam Granth, a sacred text written by tenth Sikh Guru, Guru Gobind Singh. He narrates in its verses how God spoke to him to take birth as a human being upon the Indian soil. The Guru was engaged in practicing austerities at a site engulfed by seven mountains wherein King Pandu had practiced yoga in the Dwapara Yuga. God urged him to take birth, to which he refused for he did not want to leave his state of merger with the Divine. Later, he agreed to comply with the Divine will.
For years, this site of ‘Tap Asthan’, meditative site surrounded by seven mountains wherein God spoke to the Divine Guru remained a mystery. It remained a mystery for many years. In fact, the discovery of the sacred site is attributed to Pandit Tara Singh Narotam in 1884. His findings were found and popularized by Bhai Vir Singh in his ‘Sri Kalgidhar Chamatkar’. This lead to Sant Sohan Singh embarking on his exploration to find the ‘Tap Asthan’. Thanks to the efforts of Sohan Singh and Bhai Vir Singh, Hemkund Sahib was brought to the public eye, and pilgrims began to embark on the sacred journey.
It is believed that the pilgrimage would bring one closer to Guru’s grace and renews one’s own connection with God. One can feel the reverberations of the spiritual grace that abounds in the region. What more than attaining the true grace of a Supreme Teacher that can help in one’s spiritual evolution?
