History of Char Dham Temples

The sites hold a deep spiritual significance. Here's the history and legends associated with them:

  • Yamunotri was built by the king of Tehri, Naresh Sudarshan Shah in 1839. It is the first stop in the Char Dham yatra. Surya Kund is an important hot spring close to the temple.
  • Gangotri temple was built by Amar Singh Thapa, a Gurkha general in the early nineteenth century. It is believed that Ganga descended to earth after Bhagirath's meditation to absolve the sins of humans.
  • Pandavas were on the lookout for Lord Shiva to absolve the sins that they committed on the battlefield of Mahabharata. However, Lord Shiva did not want to forgive them easily, so he transformed into a bull and went to Uttarakhand's Garhwal side. When the Pandavas found him, he dived into the ground and his hump appeared at Kedarnath. Thereafter, Pandavas built the Kedarnath Temple here.
  • Lord Badri's idol was found in the Alaknanda River by Adi Shankaracharya. He placed it later on near the Tapt Kund in a cave. A Garhwal King erected the Badrinath Temple in the sixteenth century. The background of Neelkanth Peak enhances the beauty of Badrinath Temple.
