It is said that this temple was once an ancient place of worship. In the 8th century Adi Shankaracharya brought it back by turning a Buddhist shrine into a temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu.
One popular story also says that Lord Vishnu came to Badrinath for deep meditation after being guided by a sage. Inside the temple, the idol shows him sitting in a lotus pose, the same way he was meditating.
