Best Time to Go on Chardham Yatra

The best time to go on a Chardham Tour is from May to June and September to October. Here's a quick guide on when to go and when to avoid:

Peak Season

  • Pre-Monsoon Period: The months of May and June mark the best period for going on the Chardham trip from Delhi, as you witness pleasant weather and clear skies - ideal for temple tours, sightseeing, and other pilgrimage activities. The temperature lingers between the range of 5°C and 20°C which is neither too cold nor too hot - just perfect.
  • Post-Monsoon Period: The period after monsoon welcomes you to lush greenery, fresh off the seasonal rains. The months of September and October are therefore another good period for embarking on the sacred Chardham journey. Besides the weather being cool and pleasant, you get fewer crowds too - perfect for you if you want a quiet and calm pilgrimage.

Avoidable Periods

  • Monsoon Season: Monsoon is not a great period for Char Dham travel as there is a high chance of flooding due to frequent rainfalls. Moreover, the heavy rains make the roads a bit too slippery - making the task of temple visits and trekking involved in it too difficult. July to August marks the monsoon period in the hills and should be avoided.
  • Winter Season: The temperature plunges to below 0°C because of heavy snowfall. As a result, the shrines are closed in the winter months of November to April and temple visits are just not possible.

Therefore, if you're thinking of booking a Delhi to Chardham Yatra package, the best seasons are pre and post-monsoons.

History & Significance of Chardham Yatra

The Chardham Yatra is an immensely spiritual pilgrimage. It's a highly revered journey, enriched through centuries-old history and folklore.

History

Adi Shankaracharya, an 8th-century Hindu philosopher, played an important role in the establishment of the Chardham sites. He is believed to have established the Badrinath temple. He discovered a black stone idol of Lord Narayan (considered to be a form of Lord Vishnu) in the holy river of Alaknanda River. Later, he enshrined it in the form of a cave. Over the years, it got housed in the present-day temple and now is a key pilgrimage site.

He is also said to have constructed the present-day Kedarnath Temple on the site that had the much older shrine, dating back to Mahabharata times.

The four sacred shrines also find mention in Hindu mythology epics like the Mahabharata and Ramayana. The sites are also highly revered in Hindu scriptures like Vishnu Purana, Shiva Purana, and Skanda Purana.

Significance

The Chardham tour is highly spiritually significant and is closely linked to Moksha, the highest spiritual pinnacle one can reach! Each Dham has a legend associated with it and is an archetype of a spiritual realm.

  • Yamunotri - Karma (Action): This shrine is dedicated to Goddess Yamuna, the sister of Yama (God of Death). As per the legends, she holds the power to cleanse your sins and bless you with a peaceful and painless death.
  • Gangotri - Bhakti (devotion): The prime deity of the Gangotri shrine is Goddess Ganga. According to the ancient anecdote, she herself descended to Earth to cleanse the sins of King Bhagiratha's ancestors. And in the present age, it's widely believed that whoever takes a dip in her holy waters gets their soul cleansed and purified.
  • Kedarnath - Tapa (austerity): As per the legend, Lord Shiva took the form of a bull here. And later, disappeared into the ground leaving his hump behind. There are also a lot of other interesting facts related to Kedarnath that are mentioned in old scriptures. Moreover, Pandavas atone for their sins here, after the Kurukshetra war concluded.
  • Badrinath - Jnana (Knowledge): Lord Vishnu is the prime deity of Badrinath Temple. It is believed that this is where he atoned for not fulfilling his worldly duties. He sat under the Badri (berry) tree and went into a deep meditation.
