The holy doors of Kedarnath shall open to the members of the general public on 9th May after a 6-month winter hiatus during which period the famous Himalayan temple was snow trapped.

Religious essential rituals will be performed on 9th May 7 A.M as confirmed by members of the Mandir Samiti; post this the gates will be thrown open. The head priest Rawal of the Kedarnath Bhima Shankar Ling temple fixed the holy re-opening date on Mahashivaratri. During the winter months, Shiva was worshipped in the Omkareshwar temple at Umkinath.

More than 1 lakh devotees from India and abroad visit the Kedarnath temple on an annual basis. The temple stands at a scintillating height of 11.755 feet in the Garhwal Himalayas. Every year the temple remains sealed for 6 severe winter months due to the fierce snowfall in that area.

All the other three famous shrines of Gangotri, Badrinath and Yamunotri are an important part of the Char Dham circuit of Uttarakhand. These shrines will also open for the public in May. Gangotri and Yamunotri temples will open on 9th May along with Kedarnath while Badrinath will open its holy doors to the public on 11th May.
