Garhwali is an Indo-Aryan language from the Central Pahari group, spoken across the Garhwal region of Uttarakhand. It carries its own ISO code \u2014 gbm \u2014 and its own grammar, separate from Hindi, even though the two share a common ancestry and most Garhwali speakers move between both languages without thinking about it.<\/span><\/p>\n

The 2011 Census recorded 2,482,089 people in India who gave Garhwali as their mother tongue. Of those, 2,322,406 live in Uttarakhand itself; the remaining 159,683 are spread across states like Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, and Haryana, mostly through migration. That’s the last hard count available \u2014 India hasn’t run a fresh census since, so any number you see claiming to reflect “2026 speakers” is an estimate dressed up as a fact.<\/span><\/p>\n
