The Four Temples of Winter Char Dham Yatra
The access to the original Char Dhams is blocked post-November, owing to heavy snowfall in the region. Therefore, come winter, the idols of the Chardhams are shifted to different locations, which are then collectively known as the winter Chardhams. This movement is done in order to help pilgrims continue their worship and receive blessings.
Here's a quick summary of the winter temples of the Char Dhams:
Summer Shrine | Winter Seat | Location |
---|---|---|
Kedarnath | Omkareshwar Temple | Ukhimath |
Badrinath | Narsingh Temple | Joshimath |
Gangotri | Mukhba Village Temple | Mukhba |
Yamunotri | Shani Dev Temple | Kharsali |
Kharsali (for Yamunotri):
Just like Yamunotri, this is the first site that is visited in the winter Chardham trip. You'll be spoiled with breathtaking views and the tranquillity of the region. On our excursion last year, our pilgrim group enjoyed snow-capped mountains and lush valleys a great deal.
Mukhba (for Gangotri):
The winter temple is located just an hour's drive from the main Gangotri temple. The village is quite picturesque & serene, and therefore makes for an ideal setting for the winter abode of the Goddess who symbolizes purity.
Ukhimath (for Kedarnath):
This third winter seat is dedicated to Lord Shiva. The trip is here loaded with both divine spirituality and pristine natural beauty.
Joshimath (for Badrinath):
The last stop on your winter Chardham tour is dedicated to Lord Vishnu. The landscapes, the scenery, and the spiritual ambiance here are everything you're looking for in this pilgrimage.
Best Time for Winter Chardham Tour
The winter Char Dham Yatra becomes active in the months when the regular Chardham Yatra stops, that is, from November to March. However, the best time to go on a winter Chardham trip is in the months of November, February, and March. The whole area gets enveloped in a light snow, and the views are super beautiful.
Taking our pilgrims on this special trip, we remembered encountering magical views on the lanes. We also found the weather to be pleasantly cold and perfect for taking a stroll and venturing out for some light winter sports.
If you're also thinking of booking a Winter Chardham Yatra Package, then these three months are your best bet!
Winter Char Dham Yatra Cost
Our 10-day customizable Chardham tour packages in winters costs just INR 40,300. There are no hidden charges, and the pricing is 100% transparent.
In this package, your transport, food, and hotel arrangements will be handled by us entirely.
Why Do Char Dham Yatra in Winter?
Visiting the winter seats of the deities has its own advantages. This pilgrimage blesses you with a lot many things which you won't get with a normal Chardham Yatra. Here's what you can expect with a winter Char Dham Yatra in Uttarakhand:
Enjoy the Unique Charm of Winter Pilgrimage
The Chardham tour in winter is usually more calm and serene than the summer one, which is quite bustling and busy, especially in the peak season. The fact that very few devotees cover this trip makes it a less crowded and peaceful pilgrimage. The snow-blanketed landscapes and the inherent tranquillity of the winters make it a unique Char Dham trip.
Winter Abode Rituals and Festivals
When you visit the winter Chardhams, you get to enjoy the festivities and rituals that are exclusive to the winter season. We took our pilgrimage group to see Doli Yatra, prayers, and other ceremonies, and the visit was so worth it!
Scenic Beauty
If you do the winter Chardham trip, you're blessed with the pristine beauty of the Himalayas, which is at its best during the winter season. From stunning snow-covered hills to picture-perfect views, you're in for a treat. Don't forget to take your camera with you!
Travel Tips for Winter Char Dham Yatra
- The weather at the winter Char Dhams is quite cold, and therefore, it's wise to carry warm clothes like sweaters, jackets, and thermals.
- The cold up there can dehydrate you. To prevent that, drink water regularly.
- The places retire early and have an early sunset. We advise against travelling late at night. Try to wrap up your outdoor activities by 4 PM.
- Carry SIMs of BSNL or Jio as they provide better cellular coverage than any other network in the hilly regions.
- Keep tabs on weather updates and road conditions, as there could be snowstorms and closures.
- For better safety, always travel with a four-wheel vehicle on a snow-covered road.
- Carry snow gear with you, with items like snow goggles, snow gloves, pocket warmers, etc.
- Pack a first aid kit complete with essential medicines and band-aids.
- Being regular travellers to the winter seats of Chardhams, we recommend buying travel insurance, as it helps with weather-related uncertainties.
