When Do the Char Dham Portals Open?

The opening dates for the Char Dham Yatra of 2024 were announced on the holy eve of Basant Panchami on 14 February 2024 by the temple committee of Char Dham. Given below are the dates that will mark the opening of the Char Dham portals and when the idol will be transferred from their winter homes to the main temple.

Yamunotri DhamThe idol will be transferred from its winter abode in Kharsali (located at a distance of just 20 minutes) and be presided in the main temple during the holy eve of Akshaya Tritiya on 10 May 2024.

Gangotri Dham Gangotri Dham also opens up during the holy eve of Akshaya Tritiya which his scheduled to take place on 10 May 2024 this year. The presiding idol is transferred to the main dham shrine from her winter home in Mukhba village which is situated at a distance of just half an hour.

Kedarnath Dham The opening date of the Kedarnath Temple is decided and declared on the auspicious occasion of Maha Shivratri. This year the portal of Kedarnath will open on 15 May 2024.

Badrinath DhamEvery year the opening date of Badrinath Dham is decided and declared on the auspicious of Basant Panchami. This year the portals of the shrine will open on 16 May 2024 at 4:15 a.m.

When will the Char Dham Portals Shut Down?

The dates for the closing of the holy Char Dham portals are decided by the temple committee during the holy eve of Vijay Dashmi or Dussehra which is expected to fall on 12 October 2024.

Yamunotri Dham – The closing date for the Dham is depicted on the holy eve of Bhai Dooj which will take place on 31 October 2024 and it will also mark the time when the idol of the presiding deity is shifted to its the village of Kharsali.

Gangotri Dham – The temple Kapat is shut down for Darshan during the holy occasion of Diwali which is predicted to take place on 2 November 2024. This is also the time when the idol of goddess Ganga is transferred to the village of Mukhba.

Kedarnath Dham – Likewise every year, the portals of the shrine will be closed on the grand occasion of Bhai Dooj i.e. on 2 November 2024.

Badrinath Dham – Every year the closing dates of the shrine depends on the occasion of Vijayadashami, hence this year it will be closed on 9 November 2024.

Darshan Timings for Char Dham Temples in 2024:

Badrinath Dham – The temple doors open for Darshan as early as 4:30 am in the morning where the morning Aarti and puja rituals take place till 6:30 am in the morning. The general public starts thronging the temple from 7 am to 8 am in the morning. This goes on till 1 pm in the afternoon after which there is a short recess and the Darshan reopens at 4 pm in the afternoon and finally the doors are closed at 9 pm at night.

Kedarnath Dham – The temple opens its doors for early morning puja rituals at 4 am in the morning that carries on till 7 am after which the general crowd starts entering the temple. The Darshan goes on till 1 pm in the afternoon and after a short break of 3 hours it resumes at 4 pm in the afternoon. The temple finally closes for Darshan at 9 pm in night.

Yamunotri Dham – The devotees start their Darshan at 7 am or 8 am in the morning. Just like the other dham sites a short break of 1 pm to 4 pm is given which can be considered as a short recess. Then after 4 hours the temple doors closes for the day at 8 pm in night.

Gangotri Dham – The temple Darshan timings for devotees opens up early morning at 6:15 am which carries on till 2:00 pm in the afternoon. After a short break of 1 hour at 3:00 pm the temple Darshan reopens and carries on till 9:30 at night.

Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit Chardham is from April to June as the weather remains sunny and comfortable. The snow melts away in small rivulets unveiling the lush green underneath. The mountains muffled in white clouds, whispering cedars, blooming flowers, crystal blue sky, dancing rivers together make a picture-perfect mountainscape.
